Just wanted to say hi to everyone. Just signed up as a new member. This site is awesome, I found my way to it through an article in Garage magazine. I'm working on a '63 Rat Rod Cadillac, any others on this site into slammed/primered old Cads? I've attached a pic of my Cad. Should have it in primer in a couple of weeks and then It's getting some old school pinstripping. Anyone here from Minnesota?

Dude, why primer that thing? Pick your favorite color and go for it, then get a hold of some metalflake and go nuts on the roof. I wouldn't do all that body work and then just leave it in primer. Unless of course the primer is just a step on the way to being painted, but I don't want to get that argument going. Lord knows it's an ongoing topic on here already. Anyway, where in MN you from? My mom lives in Lakefield and I live just down 35 in Ames, IA.
    Welcome.

Also, you two might want to cut back on the throwing around or "rat rod" here. Kind of like asking for punishment. A Cadillac should never be used in the same sentence as "rat rod". Kind of like oil and water.

I'm from Lakeville, a south suburb of Minneapolis. The Spring Extravagansa is this Sunday at the Fairgrounds in St. Paul, one of the bigger swaps and a must go.

As far as the primer goes I just like the look. I'm planning on some kind of metalflake addition on the roof, maybe black metalflake with some kind of metalflake flames, but have to put together a few schillings before I add that touch as I'm also putting together a big block Chevelle.

I know, but it's the only way I can describe the look I want. Maybe I should call it "Old School", or ?. I just like the old custom look of the 50's and 60's and Cadillacs.

Primer is just the first step. I do plan a full custom paint job, but until I get the $4k+ to do that I need to have some kind of custom look and I do like the primer 50's and 60's look. I'm doing this myself and my skills aren't good enough to lay down some real nice paint and clearcoat yet, that's another reason I'm going with the primer look this round. So I'm going with this look for now and then plan on having it redone in the future.

Welcome, what part of the state you from?

  11. Yeah, that name will get mixed up with our own "kustumizer"... [IMG]

Don't primer that car...even though fancy paint jobs are high dollar...just finish the body work...and take it to MAACO. They'll charge you $500ish for a decent 2 color (one body, one roof) paint job of your color choice...and even throw in metalflake. It's alot better than running around in primer in a '63 model car. You have to take in consideration that "traditional" hod rods & customs were phasing out around the mid-60's...so the only one's in primer were the OLDer cars... To get the "look"...I'd throw a couple coats of your favorite solid color with a white or silver flake'd roof...

All paint **** aside...welcome to the board!

  12. Hey Custom,

Welcome man. I say paint that car any way you want. like ***holes, everyones got an opinion - and it shows on the HAMB [IMG]

you'll quickly find after a little while that most guys on here are a bit over the "rat rod" trend and all the pretenders its brings with it. but i really dig your can and i think black would look cool. maybe a compromise and have a satin finish instead of matt?

it's a cool car . . . don't ruin it. black primer with pinstripes on that era of cad is the style of the 1990's not the 50's or 60's . make it an actual NEW style or go traditional. but 90's style is just played out right now.

If you can't shoot bc/cc at least use colored primer. light blue with a dark blue flake roof.

There is already a kustomizer on the board- you might want to change it to cad kustomiser or something just to be polite.

Nice car, Kustom... those whites with the astros(?) look awesome on that car. Looks like it's a fun car.

  15. If you quit messing with the Chevelle, you could get the Caddy in gloss. [IMG] That thing is too smooth to be in primer. Welcome to the HAMB, I think.

    Welcome.
I vote for the name change as well. When I saw that you only had 4 posts I thought I entered some Twilight Zone time warp thing.
    Kad Kustomizer is cool.
Will the real "kustomizer" please stand up? [IMG]

I must have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed.

I guarantee people are going to get you confused with "Kustumizer" (or however the heck he spells his name).

Running a Cadillac in primer is about the dumbest thing out there. I blame the "Ye Ole Stool Rawdzzzzzz" culture for that misguided ****. If you think primer on a Cadillac is cool, I can't even being to explain why that is so wrong. You should paint it flat black with red flames and emblazon "BACK TO THE FIFTIES" all over it. THAT would be cool.

The term "rat rod" is stupid enough. Don't dig your hole deeper by calling it "old school". Despite being a stupid, meaningless term anyway, there is nothing "old school" about a ratty Cadillac. You should sell the Cadillac and by something ****py so you can ruin that instead.

I dunno i would leave it the way it is, ship it off to Iraq since it's already wearing Desert Camo!

Seriously welcome dude, I'm just ribbin' 'ya as you are a newbie.. also I second (or, 10th) the paint idea.. primer is definitely played out, even in rods.. You could wet sand/polish a maaco paint job flat as gl***.. i've done it, in fact, on a 66 caddy! looked like an orange when I started..

Anyway, good luck w/it and keep everyone posted!

Holy ****, talk about trial by fire. Now I know why I usually lurk these boards. I now know how Mike Tyson’s first opponents felt after he got done with them in the ring.
I defiantly will change the screen name.
I'd paint the Cad in a heartbeat if I thought I could get the body straight enough to look good with a shine on it. This primer thing (it will actually be flat black paint) was a short-term fix for me to do a little show cruising this summer and maybe next.
How about some more idea's on flat paint/metal flake combos that would look good.
I'm taking it over to a buddy’s house today and I'll talk to him about paint options.
Now I better crawl back into my whole and keep quiet!

SEE...THATS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!! Nice. Remember...the lighter the color, the better it hides ****py body work! [IMG]

  28. Well i just got a new one chewed out about a week ago about the 'rat rod' ***le. I like the idea of Satin black. Especially on a Caddy. It give the I dont Give a **** at***ude, and i like it. If that was my car i would do tha tsame thing you are. Satin Black. That is what my two cars are painted in. Eventually they will get a professional Satin Black paint job. But for the time being, Rattle can is fine.

Ill tell you one thing, dont get discouraged by some of the negative things people say here. This board is very informative, and has very helpful people. There are a few who dont think i have ever read of putting down one positive comment. But stick around for when you need help. People here know everything. Welcome.

  29. Alright first I changed my screen name. Didn't mean to tread on anyone's territory.
Second, now you got me rethinking the whole thing. Being this flat black look was going to be short term I might have to do things a little differently. I'll have to see what my buddy thinks of my body work and if he thinks it will look OK with paint and clearcoat.
Don, I like the quick idea's, especially the white roof, it really makes the whitewalls stand out. If nothing else I might paint the roof and use a flat color for the body.
    Any other idea's?

some people know everything, some people know nothing, some people know everything about nothing, some people know nothing of something then there're still others who know nothing but belive they know everything, some people who know something but do not belive they know anything, still others know something but because they do they profess to know everything, some who know everything profess to know nothing....then their is me........I know nothing of anything and even less than something but I know someone who knows alittle of everything so I gues I know a guy who knows alittle of everything and he knows someone who knows nothing of anything.........Is that clear?
