Well, I have all 4 corners rounded, and I am really happy with how they came out. This mod really makes the flow around the rear of the rear fenders and trunk area work much better, and helps make these awkward fitting trunks fit (and look like the fit) better. The trunk still needs some hammer and dolly work on the edges, but Im really happy with the way this came out. Also, after some advice from Rikster, I am removing the drip rail. It has to go. The car is really getting a very smooth and flowing look, and then the drip rail just ruins it.
I cant believe how much of a difference that makes...It just makes everything flow...Very nice indeed...It has probably been asked before, but what color are ya painting it?
Smart bodymod for sure. Not only does it look better BUT you won't be cutting your head on those trunk corners any longer...........ask me how I know
wow, thanks guys. Yes Denise, my forehead has been awaiting the rounded corners more than anything! Im going with a deep maroon. Im going to experiment with a gold powder sold at art stores mixed into the clear to replicate the early Barris practice of adding "gold powder" (if anyone knows the source for the real deal, I have looked a while, and gotten nowehere) to their paint to make it pop in the sun. I already have the vinyl for the interior, its maroon (the smooth parts) and bone white (the tuck & roll part). Early 50's Barris look is my goal.
It's amazing how much attention to detail like that adds to the overall look. I've always liked that car...looking forward to more progress pics. Bryan
I'll third that vote. Without the driprail the door cuts up into the roof and the 1/4 window doesn't and it makes the 1/4 window look too small and out of place Now round off the front corners of the hood to match!
Product Of Sweden? Ya confused... Why is there so much anger on so many threads the last few days? Just because I PREFER one look over another doesnt mean I think anyone's WHOLE CAR is a POS. Why do YOU have to go there? I just prefer the driprail on if if there's a door window frame that would look cut up into the roof and the 1/4 window not, like I alredy said. I think, if the drip rail goes, tso should the door window frame by molding it into the roof lose the B pillar and hardtop the roof, keep the roof and window opening lines flowing, Llke that Cletus guy's car!
I like the round trunk corners but I'm with the others that say the shaved drip rails aren't going to look right. I'd have to see it in a photoshop both ways to say 100% for sure, but I don't think I'd like it without.
No anger involved, but I do get tired of people feeling the need to tell people not to do something that they plan to do because "they" feel it looks better a different way Especially when he said he is doing an early Barris look and at that time it was common for Barris to remove the drip rails.
Well guys, I appreciate the input. But I dont ike the driprail thats on there, its not original, the guy who chopped it for me did it, irs more like a "roll" not an "L" shaped drip rail. its too big and obtrusive. It is driving me NUTS. It has to go. Worst case scenario is I remove it, and decide I want drip rail, and I replicate the original style "L" Shaped channel again. But I am going for the early Barris look. Look at the Lopez ford. On a dark colored, shiny painted car, the problem that DrJ brings up isnt very noticable. On a lighter, FLAT paint car, like Deron Wrights 41 (dont get me wrong Deron, I love your car no matter what), the "lower" quarter window definately stands out MUCH more.
Drip rails might be funktional, and sometimes they might look good, or even better when left on a chopped top custom. But if you are strying to built your car to represent a certain time in custom car history like Chad is doing with his... the late 40's early 50's Barris style, then you have to examn the styles those builders used back then. And conferm to that. Barris, Ayala and many other Californian custom builders from that era removed the drip rails, simply becuase they felt it made the body flow much better, make it look like it was shaped out of soft metal. And the good weather ofcoars did help as well. Same thing with Spotlights.... you might not care for them, but if you want to go period perfect... you need to have them... but thats a whole differnt story! here are a few of the same body style with no drip rails... and they all look mighty fine to me! Wonderful flowing shapes And we always do need an exeption.. here is a 41 Mercury coupe built by Barris that still has the drip rails... and to me they do take away from the flow. Not that I dont care for the car though!... And Chad... I love the new rounded corners on the trunk.
the corners look great. Nice work. I like how you did the rain gutters as well. This is my all time favorite
