Some people just don't get it.

As aformentioned, there's a difference between using parts because of the lines of the parts and how they affect the overall style of the car... and then there's stupid crap like olds covers on SBC's.

As for the kids truck, I frankly don't care how it looks. It sounds like it's a stupid project.

I Can't even imagine how hilarious it is to see some dorky 17 year old with a pomp, peg pants, blasting psychobilly (something tells me this kid knows nothing about rockabilly) cruising down the road in a slammed 88 chev that's supposed to look like a hot rod. :D :D :D :D :D

Did you really just try to claim that "hot rod" 1988 chevys built by poser 17 year old rockabilly kids are what's keeping traditional hotrodding alive?

I'll be the first to call you an idiot for that one.

I like the idea of olds valve covers. You will be happier with a artist brush and painting by hand.

Get some of the fake valve covers that are made for a SBC and sell the real ones to someone with a real Olds. Both parties will be happy.

i agree, i have seen the same and other things that really arent traditional at all on some , the kid that posted this thread and i are one of the very few people let alone "kids" in our town that know what traditional hot rodding and rockabilly are. we have been learning from guys that actually did the hot rod thing when it was in it's infancy and they have taught us a wealth of knowledge about what they did with what they had and they are so happy that we are carrying on the tradition. ya know this forum is great but some of you guys need to lay off on the disrespect, us young bloods have to work with what we have, we dont have alot of time to work when we are in school all day so we save up and hope that when we get out we can go buy an old hot rod and hop up the motor and have some fun doing it the traditional way but in the mean time we have to customize what we have or we will go crazy, that's true hot rodder.... oh and by the way i think the olds rocket valve covers is gonna look real nice!!!!

I'd add practice on an old license plate first to get paint thinning right. And you might try a rubber sanding block if it's too much trouble hunting down a rubber roller. I think you may end up repainting ivory first, then red and block sanding off the red anyways, but good luck.

    Cry us a river.

Driving an 88 chevy doesn't count as "carrying on the tradition" man. Not even close. I don't care if you ARE using what you have. Would you still be "hot rodding" if you had a 1995 Dodge Neon to work with? These guys who have given you a "wealth of knowledge" weren't giving you drugs too, are they? Cause it sounds like they may be on some.

You're no more a true hot rodder than some idiot with an orange and green honda civic.

If you really understood, you'd know why...

As for the respect issue, no, we don't have to lay off. Know why? Cause there's no law that says that respect is OWED. I don't care who you are, no one owes you respect. Even if you are some young kid with a modern car that thinks it's a hot rod.

Man, there's so much about you two thats annoying that I don't even know where to start.

"we have to customize what we have or we will go crazy, that's true hot rodder"

Man, I think you missed the whole point behind that one.

    mpls cafe racer...

Why do you have a cob up your ass?

A cool shop truck is not an orange/green honda or a dodge neon. Plenty of us have a cool shop truck in addition to our traditional car (Mine is a lowered big block suburban). They pull trailers. They pick up engines. They get us back and forth to work when it is -10F.

Why NOT make it hot rod style, or vintage style??? Would you rather see a 17 year old kid with 26" spinner rims and shorts hanging around his thighs?

Seriously, were you dropped on your head as a kid, or did your daddy burn you with cigarettes? What the hell...

I am confused why you are entertained with f__cking with someone you don't even know...

If you are so annoyed, why don't you find another post to haunt...

    Nice words, dad.

Frankly, it's too bad that it's clear your son can't wipe his ass himself, let alone defend himself. I'm sure you're the one with teats in the family.

As for your kid, I still think he's an idiot. You're right, I DON'T know him, and honestly, I don't want to. He sounds like a moron. But you know what they say, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Would I rather see him riding a car in spinners? I'll tell you what I WOULD rather see... you and him finding something that you know about to do rather than wasting our time here.

Congrats on your non-branching family tree.

    Smile.. jesus loves you.

PS: There's nothing cool about an 88 chevy. Even if you are stupid enough to think you can make it "hot rod styled". Moron...

As aformentioned... SOME PEOPLE JUST DON'T GET IT. (Hint: That means you and your offspring)

  18. FWIW, you will NOT find a lot of support for putting Olds covers on a SBC here. That's one of the things a lot of us don't like. Having a nice daily is cool. An '88 anything does not fit this boards style. Simple as that.

Also, consider that you might be embarrassing the kid by arguing his side. He asked the question on his own. Maybe you should let him field the comments himself. When I was his age, having my mom or dad get into my disagreements would mortify me. And dad? Your car in your avatar looks pretty Street Rodderish to me. Maybe you don't get what a lot of us here are about?

Also, the kid sounds like he might have an open mind to learn on here. Back off and let him go. Maybe he'll take the comments to heart and research what a real traditional hot rod is and build one when he gets the money and experience.

Best idea would be to just go out an get yourself a nice 324 or 371 Olds engine complete with the valve covers and yank the sbc out for later use in a Ford. :D

Sorry I can't help you with painting valve covers as I took off my Olds covers for my 371 years ago and replaced them with finned Offenhauser covers.

  23. Here's an idea, how about a little CONSTRUCTIVE criticism, instead of calling a 17 year old kid who's into U.S. iron a moron. What did you drive in high school? At least he isn't driving some rice garbage. Sure fake stuff is gay, but every body has done something in their past and thought later, "What the fuck was I thinking?" Let's cut him some slack and lead him down the right path.

Wow, this is a fun thread! I kinda agree with both sides here on many points. I own a 55 olds, this car is my everyday car. This car is also a "hotrod", my definition of hotrod is a car modified by its owner for increased performance. My olds came to me with 202hp, with a bit of my money, time, and blood it now has over 400hp, therefore it is a hotrod. I have no problems with customizing and/or hotrodding an 88' pickup, a good buddy of mine drives a customized lowered 85' chevy pickup that I borrow whenever I need a truck, this truck has many "traditional" style points about it, but it is NOT a "traditional rod" by any means! It IS a hotrod truck though because I am the guy who made it fast, even though it is far too new for my personal taste its fun to drive, and a good looking truck. In my book the term "traditional" does not go well with anything built in the 80's. However it does not mean you can't have a cool truck, it just wont be a "traditional rod".
Now, I don't think the kid deserves all this abuse, and even though I agree its a tacky idea... I will share my expierience with painting those raised letters. I have tried the foam roller method and I failed, then I made a mask with a steady hand and an exacto blade, I first painted the letters the desired color, masked them and painted the rest with decent sucess. Then I got some chrome ones and this time I was fortunate enough to buy a perfectly made mask on ebay that did it the reverse of my homemade mask and it worked the best. So search the name "Bing's Garage" in ebay users and maybe he is still selling those masks. Also, the rocket covers fit OVER sbc covers. You have to weld studs on your stock covers then put the olds ones on top. This does no harm to the covers and they can be easily removed for use on a real rocket.
For all the hardcore fellas who disapprove; maybe he will use them until he finds a more worthy vehicle and maybe we should give him the chance to redeem himself. At least he's trying and we could be a little more gentle in offering guidance.
For the kid being barraged with others opinions; yours is the most important, but know this, if you pull up next to a black primer 55' olds rocket88 ht... know that it is powered by a real rocket engine and you are challenged!

    Riiight....

Hotrod? It's modified for performance by its owner.

(This is why really vague definitions are stupid.)

FWIW that guy would laugh at your hot rod and the 18 year olds.... he's pushing down 575hp.

Guess that makes it MORE of a hotrod than your olds?

Dont waste your time richard, these guys have got blinders on. They are acting like the kid did some dastardly deed for Christ's sake, all he did was ask a question. I'm sure he could be doing a lot worse shit than hanging out here and getting bashed.

And..... now their picking on his dad and saying some pretty nasty stuff, stuff that shouldn't be said, very poor taste. All of this because of an 88 chevy and some valve covers? wtg guys, nice job..... you must be really be proud of yourselves. I say paint the valve covers anyway you like and anybody that doesn't like it, tell 'em to fuck-off.

MORONS? we all know who the REAL MORONS are here.
Guy's like that make me sick.

Reread the thread there guy.... kiddos daddy stepped in acting like a cowboy before anyone said shit to him.

Maybe someone should get junior off mommys boobie and let him argue his own side.

  30. I looked back and didn't see any bashing of his dad. He has a nice '55 in the pic. I don't think he'd mind being called a Street Rodder.

The kid doesn't deserve being called names, but putting Olds covers on his SBC shouldn't be encouraged either.

This thread is getting dumber by the minute.

Hey Kid. Take the constructive comments and ignore the insults. I thick skin is an asset here on the HAMB. Thick heads are common here.
