Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 52chevlaynframe, Sep 8, 2007.

  1. I just bought a 1970 firebird 10 bolt rear end for my 52 chevy. I was wondering if anyone had some tips/advise on how to do the swap. I would like to use to stock suspension i have for now. Any help is appreciated. THANKS

  5. I had one of those Pontiac rears, but it's been a while...if they're the same as the '70-79 Camaros (which I believe they are), you can drill a new hole in perches 1.5" forward of the stock hole (this compensates for the offset locating pin in the stock leaf springs). More info here

Otherwise, Summit sells universal Mopar perches that work great for rear-end swaps. Cut off the old perches, mock the rear on the leaf springs in the new perches, center the rear by measuring from the frame, set your pinion, tack the perches, remove, and finish your welds.

Do a search here for "pinion angle" if you're not familiar with setting that up.

  8. For what it's worth, get the new Rod & Custom for pictures of a new kit by Fatman which is made to put a late rear in these cars - it's mostly just a set of lowering blocks that have the locator pin holes offset to fit the stock springs, plus the U-bolts, and the bottom plate has a shock mount on it. It's a nice kit, but I don't know how it's priced for essentially a couple U-bolts, a piece of plate steel, and a piece of box tube with a couple holes drilled in it.

  9. cool. that would be a really helpful. im gonna go buy the copy before i go to work tomorrow. thanks

  10. question for the very knowlegable people on here.... i have been looking at a lot of 52 chevy grills and they all have "teeth" on the grill. i know people add a couple more for a "custom" look, but mine doesnt seem to have them? any help? is mine not a 52 grill. it doesnt have the side marker lights, but they could have been removed? thanks

  11. 51 is virtually the same grille, but no teeth. If yours is a '52 grille it should have holes for the teeth in it, seems like they go on with one bolt.

The side marker lights come out easy, it's just a stamped piece with the light in it.. I'm not sure what they look like without it, the only one I've had apart was rotted bad, but it would be a simple change.
