i'm actually looking to have a small plaque made for a trophy i'm building for a car show, and i wanted to have the category and car show's name stamped into something metal (not quite sure yet what the object will be).

i remeber a lot of talk about a year ago (?) about stamping vin's into frame rails, but i can't find anything on the subject.

    can anyone help me out?

    thank you.

i don't know anyone that would have the balls to admit to the federal crime of stamping vin numbers on an open forum but maybe it's just me :)

Ya I don't know anything about stamping frames but you can get letter and number stamps at any tool shop. I think you can even get a cheap set at Harbour Freight. A buddy of mine uses a set to stamp his business name in Heads that he ports.

For a trophy, you might consider a thin piece of steel, and weld it onto the final steel, and then dress the weld.

Edit: Harbor Freight Stamps are terrible. The "8" stamp is always worthless.

we do it here all the time,no ch***is number,no registration. Or..do you mean .." Does anybody stamp fake numbers into ch***is of suspect cars..."?????.
You only need a 1lb ball pein hammer to stamp numbers. On sheet metal, use a dolly underneath to support the steel so the letters leave a proper mark.
As for quality, pay for ****...expect ****.

yeah, well we only need one and i don't want something that looks like it was m*** produced at a trophy shop, and i damned sure don't want anything plastic.

thanks for the harbor freight idea though, i had no idea they sold those...

  10. Find a high school with a shop cl***. Have one of the kids do it. Or maybe not, all of us had half a year of it in 7th grade and one of the projects was a wall-mount candleholder with a mirror in it. My younger sister did a nice job except she got the idea to stamp "Merry Christmas" into it. One letter at a time. Without anything to guide to keep them even. It looks like a drunk did it...

this is just a thought...but how 'bout a TROPHY shop? That's what they do.....engrave stuff....most of them have high-end pantograph engravers with fonts for pretty much any style of letter/number you could imagine - and...it's much more professional looking than some stamped-on stuff with no style (and it generally comes out uneven unless you have some kind of alignment bracket/slots.

Kind of like asking, "does anyone have their X wife burried in the back yard?" Even if it were so, you just can't admit it, no matter how happy it makes you.

I have the 3/8 old ford stamps which has a star. what weight of big hammer would be needed to get decent numbers on my Trophy. I tried a 4pounder with the harbor freight stamps and it was pathetic
