    What's the scoop on this motor? It's hard to see, but those valve covers look crazy, is that some kind of overhead valve configuration or am I just hallucinating?

    Those are Thickstun head covers on a flathead. They were used on boat engines to keep water off the sparkplugs. (or maybe just to look cool)
    The engine has the full Thickstun set-up: intake, air-cleaner, and head covers.
