I am sure that this topic has been covered around here but I thought I would bring it up to the top anyway. Besides finding one of the old floorshift conversions made by Ansen and others (they seem to be made of unobtainium or mega-moneytanium), has anybody had any luck putting together a floor shift conversion for GM selector three-speed transmissions? I've been trying to dope something out but if any of you folks have any ideas I'd be interested to hear about them or see photos of what you've done.
I was working on one last winter, but the project got set aside halfway through in favor of shoveling snow, and I never got back to it. I was making real progress, though; it's made from a cheapo three speed shifter of the past ( I think it's an old Foxcraft). A Hurst won't work, because it's got to be a shifter with exposed shift arms. When I get the shifter completed, I'll make the information available, but currently, it's still in an embryonic state. If you're desparate, PM me and I'll try to explain the concept of what I'm doing to it.
i am looking for a ansen conversion shift kit or something similar. it would be fine when someone had some detailed pics so i could try to build it or modify a similar one.
I just pulled a floor shifter for an auto out of an older postal jeep at the yard on sunday. Looks like it could be a start for a hot rod shifter. It is a rod type thru the floor type. jerry
The pictures I have seen of this kind of shifter use a "G" shaped link that contacts the side of the shifter to convert the side-to-side motion of the shifter into a fore-and-aft motion when it gets to the range selector at the transmission. It needs to be spring-loaded as well but the spring could be attached to the range selector arm at the side of the transmission. Unless I find one of the original conversion kits, I planned on getting a regular three-speed floor shift conversion kit and starting from there.
