Bye the looks of the shadows, it's only sitting about 3" off the ground too. Those auto parts store shackles are going to hit probably before that lower control arm hits. It bet that think clanks pretty hard when it hits a bump...... There is a combo of undercut welds and flat out boogers on there. Was this done by a couple of kids????? Why is there an air hose in the picture? Where were you at when you took this picture? If this is in someone's driveway, you ought to leave a note with a link to this post. Seriously. This is some dangerous shit. PS, I thought the no marks bolts are grade 2, not enough shear strength for a front end IMO....
Insurance? WTF. He needs a preacher! On a more serious note the guy who build that is a total "Owner Operater" (wanker)
WTF! This is Australian?? I need to know who's it is, I'm in the top half of the country, I suddenly feel very UN-SAFE!
The thing looks as if it has been built for a while????? Looks like a time Bomb, it's not IF it breaks, IT's when!!!!!
Greetings For us FNG to early rods, have all the problems been pointed out in this thread? Just trying to learn. Thanks
The whole car needs putting in a crusher - there can't be anything left worth keeping. And it just gives rodding a bad name, a very bad name! Ed
ok, i see everyone is focused on the negative. i'd like to point out it has an adjustable ride height.
The problem with the adjustable shackles, is it looks like if one were to use the lower holes that it would hit the hair-pins ( or plumbing pipe what ever).
I actually uplifted these from another street rod site...it's a USA project, although I have seen similar efforts in OZ back in the past. heres a cut'n paste from the guys journal. i suspect he's bought it like this and could have been a drag car at one time. "..... First pics of my first attempt at a street rod build. 283 cid with power glide from a circle track late model frt end was a challenge figuring out the geometry so as not to bind when under compression next task shocks whats the best way to mount them . <table border="0" cellpadding="4" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td align="center" valign="bottom"> (click photo to enlarge) </td><td align="center" valign="bottom"> (click photo to enlarge) </td><td align="center" valign="bottom"></td></tr></tbody></table>
A lot of armchair quarterbacks on here....full of advice. So I want to know if you knew this person or better yet just met him in person like at a car show, would you have the guts to point out the dangers without making an ass out of yourself? You know, constructive criticism? People aren't born with the skills or experience. 15 years ago I probably wouldn't have noticed any problem with the welds or the steering arms. There was a time I wanted a hot rod so bad but didn't have anyone to learn from or bounce ideas from, that if I had a welder, no telling what mistakes I might have made. All I'm saying is, yes its dangerous, yes it looks bad, but there aren't many people who have the guts or the tact to help out a fellow rodder by pointing out dangers and advising on how to fix them the right way. Of course there are some that won't listen, but what can you do but steer clear of them.
What scares me the most is I have people coming up to me in the factory I work at telling me how cool the Rat rods are and they want to build them. If I take the time to say Hot rods were about increases in performance and Rat Rods are about shock value they say that's what they want, something that is so shitty it looks cool. Maybe this car was planned this way. Sorry but I don't want to be near these cars, and I think it's just a matter of time before the police start pulling everyone over in a traditional car because of these idiots.
Everyone has different style and taste. The rod must be someone's pride and joy. Also the ebay sure causes the quick manufacture of rods, only in the interest of a quick buck, (or several K$ of them).
Looks like it was done quite some time ago...I don't think the "rat rodders" can be blamed for this one.
This is not cool. Don't worry about that welding or steering arm ....the radius rod end fasteners are grade 5 (peanut brittle) and are mounted in single shear (the weakest possible mounting position for a fastener). One good hit from a pot hole and the whole front-end comes off the car. Everybody thinks the NSRA safety checks are BS and some folks piss and moan about state mandated safety inspections but if these inspections/requirements help to keep retards from building death traps like this I'll take the inspections all day - especially when the alternative could be a phone call from the state police regarding this dipshit taking out a friend or family member. -Bigchief.
This has also always scared me a bit..... Maybe its safe, but It just dosent inspire confidence in me.
I see what you mean. Is that a split wishbone on a tube axle? A heim joint steering rod with no safety washers or fasteners. Ackerman could be questioniable, but at least he's trying with those disk brakes
Rule number one: If you don't know what you're doing ASK SOMEONE. #2: If you can't ask then pay a professional. #3: If you just have/need to do it yourself.... PRACTICE on something that isn't going to kill you or someone else. I have yet to meet someone that could do EVERYTHING that it takes to build a car. There are plenty of places to go to get help or info on how to do something. There's no excuse for this kind of crap. Whoever did this is a risk to everyone.
