Nice positive article. I didn't need to register to read it. Just go to http://www.mercurynews.com/entertainment then click on the "Cool and custom-made hot rods" story.
I was interviewed for this and I told the guy that there was no "San Jose Style." Great builders in the area, but not a specific known style. I named Alex, Pat, Sellers, Noch and Billy. I guess he didn't like any of my quotes, since they didn't support what he was making up. And the reporter really wanted to make a Volswagen/hot rod connection. I said that they don't have anything to do with each other. Some guys like both and have worked on both, but I wouldn't support his idea that Hot rodders learn their craft on Volkswagens. Again, he didn't like what I had to say. He definitely had an agenda when he called...I wasn't buying it.
I live in San Jo and when I think of a San Jose Style car/custom I think of a '64 Impala, candy apple red with gold trim on juice. I agree with KIRK! that the writer had an agenda to make the novice think this style was born in SJ and is new. I was embarrased to read it at work because people were thinking this is something new. The same thing was hapening in the 40s and 50s when kids then were building them just as unsafe and illegal as they are now. When is the last time you saw one like his '35 go for DMV vehicle inspection?
Cool truck I like it,San Jo style or not!! Anyone have some pics of it?? BTW the article will show up without registering if you turn your "cookie blocker" down.
That's cool for Nacho getting this press, plus it will help out alot when he starts getting business. Anything to promote him and his new shop is a positive thing, no matter what someone chooses to call it. The people that know... know and that's all that should matter If people don't get it, eventually when they dive in and spend some time in it, they'll find out! why stress on lables? I agree, some news guys/reporters always have a story or agenda before they cover things/get info and sometimes their stories revolve around that no matter what you say. All in all, good for Nacho and i hope he goes far with his new business adventure and may it be blessed with lots of customers, because he does awesome work.
Kirk... I'll agree with you on the article. The guy came to my house and interviewed me for almost 2 hours. The first thing he asked me was about the "san jose style". I told him there really wasn't any. We were just a group of friends that have had simular interests since we were kids. I told him I liked hot rods and customs across the board, finished and unfinished, and that some people don't understand what or why we build cars this way. We talked about kids today and the rice rockets they drive. I told him I felt some of them are doing the same thing hot rodders did in the 30's-50's, trying to make cheap cars go faster, and that it's a shame local drag strips can't be opened again because of noise, insurance and other crap, a lot of lives could be saved now just like back then. I showed him a bunch of my old mags and books and specific cars I borrowed ideas from. I guess I thought it was going to be more about the history of hot rods and our interpetation of them. I'm glad Nacho got a lot of press. But if it was going to be mostly about him I wish they would have shown all the other cool stuff he builds like Tikis, mugs, artwork, paintings. Either way I guess it will expose people to our type of hot rods and not think there" old dune buggys"!
San Jose appears to have been the home of many clean, well built cars using the '50s & '60s car mags as a guide. Lots of hydraulic type car interest later.
I'm with Cab, its only a label. Look on the bright side its a positive story about hotrodding Was there such a stir back in the day when the east/west coast style labels started? Who cares - where's some more pics of the car.
so I missed it, is "San Jose Style" meticulous metalwork, severely channeled cars and/or unpainted cars? Its funny when something gets printed it becomes permanently labeled no matter right or wrong, especially when RJ is used as the footnoted source. so is Jimmy Shine's truck San Jose Style?! Yeehaw!! TP congrats to pat, nacho and steve anyway!!
Cool truck, but do you see how much castor is on the front end? Maybe its just me but it looks like it would steer like one of them blade tractors...
