About 4 months ago I parted out a 59 Edsel 4dr, that has since been crushed. I was checking some wheel adapters on my stack of axles today & put both a 4-1/2 & a 5-1/2 adapter up to the Edsel axle & neither fit. So I measured & the axle has a 5" bolt circle. I do know that ford made some 5" axles in the 70's but this is definitly a 57-59 no dimple narrow early axle leaf springs & all off the car. I havent pulled the drums yet to see if the axle was redrilled but the drums have only 5 holes so unless someone adapted drums ??? Does anyone know or run across a late 50's 9" Ford Bolt pattern of 5" by 5 ?
Like years Mercurys were also 5on5 bolt pattern... Edsel & Mercs '57~'60 narrow 9" were 5on5 .... maybe even later
Are you sure your Edsel wasn't a '58? Could have been a big series '58 based on the Mercury body. Or it could have been swapped out at one time. Got any '59 Edsel stuff left?
Is yours a 6 cylinder ??? I had a '58 Edsel Ranger 2dr Sedan with 5on5 & ran a '57 Merc rear in a buddys car that was 5on5 Both ours were V8 cars
If your car has the E-400 "performance package" it will be a different pattern than yer basic Edsel..my wheels off my Edsel will not fit either my 59 6 cyl. parts car or my 58 parts car ??
My '59 Edsel has a V8 and has 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern, so did the '59 I parted out a couple years ago (wish I would have saved some of that shit for the one I have now)
I've parted out/worked on or had: 59 fords (3 2 HT & 1 convert) 58-60 Tbirds (6 of them) 1 57 sedan & a 58 wagon & all had 4.5 bolt pattern. Thats why I was so suprised to find the 5"X5 today. The 59 edsel (pulled the VIN plate for kicks) 4dr was a 361 FE 4V really clean motor that I pulled & saved. For Squawblow??? I'll pm you about the rest of the parts I pulled. Guess that ford did have a different idea : So much about his idea of standardization.
The bolt pattern varied from one model to the next. The good news is that the axles are large enough to be redrilled to 5 on 5 1/2. The bad news is the price of brake parts.
I had a '57 Mercury. It definetely had a 9" with a 5 on 5 bolt pattern. My friend has the rear end in his coupe now, but he redrilled it for Chevy pattern. I know the early 9" rears in Ford passenger cars had 5 on 4 1/2, dont know about Edsels.
It has the 332 FE and an automatic. In 58 Edsel Corsairs and Citations were Mercuries, Rangers and Pacers (and wagons) were based on Fords. All of the 59's were Ford based
litlebit old topic , so what.. I just bougth 58 Pacer convrtible. Sadly she got also 5x5 bolt pattern from factory. I do have extra 5x4.5 torque thurst II set..
My 58 Ranger was also 5x5 and put 1975 Torino front disc. brake spindles on the car with 5x4.5 pattern so I gave noname my 5x5 rear axle for his GMC shop truck and installed a mustang 5x4.5 axle. I was told all 1958 Edsel's had the 5x5 pattern.
