Satin or semi-gloss black looks like crap on 60's cars... go with something else.

yeah welcome- you seem to have a good attitude anyway.

Did you do the body work to this point- the primer spots are sort of randomly located. Why not step up and do the bodywork good enough for gloss? I think a lot of people are chiming in becuse your car looks so almost-cool already.

I wouldn't spray that thing with anything before frenching an antenna or shaving the handles- just a little custom touch. It's easy now. A lot harder later.

Welcome. That's a cool basis, 63 caddies are beautiful. From the body work you've done so far, finish it off, and do a good paint. You'll thank your self in the end.

PPG lime green metallic with fine white bodyline striping would look awesome.

Iron cross stickers and flat black paint go together. Don't you guys get it yet? Why argue. Let the guy enjoy his autozone commercials in peace. Whatever happened to the "Sickboy Startup Kit" (TM)

    Nice caddie.

You should do what YOU want to do with the car, but everyone is trying to guide you to a good decision. Flat black is kind of common, and not so great on 60s cars, so make that car stand out! Haring has some good ideas. you don't have to make it shiney.. maybe satin... or even flat is ok, but try something other than flat black and make it pop! look at the 59 wagon in a different post... satin green with a light green or silver roof. Sweet. everyone went apeshit over it. Just think about other options before you paint it flat black. If you really, really love flat black, then go for it.

    BWARHARHAR!

Anyway, Ol Scratch suggested some thin bodyline scallops. FANTASTIC!

That's what THIS STYLIN' DADDY was thinking when he pioneered the look. Check out Watson's '59 Catlick.

I really do appreciate all the insight and the input is giving me a bit to think about. I really like to white roof with color that Haring put together. It's all about money right now. I'm looking at flat or satin color options, but my biggest problem is the tan interior. I can't get that done right now, and any color I pick out looks like shit with that ugly tan interior. I'm trying to figure out a way to do something with the interior if I give it a coat of some other color then black, tan or white.
I'm going to get the first coat of primer on it next week and if it looks good enough to clearcoat I'll probably find a good color combo and paint it, I really don't want to do it twice anyways.
Thanks again for all the input, even the harsh shit made sense.

Sorry about that I was still logged in on my home computer with the old profile.

  13. OK, what do you think of this combo. White top, heavy metal flake with a satin yellow body? Would probably still work with my interior if I couldn't make changes to it.

Let me know what you think, brutal as it may be!

This "flat black it till it looks cool" is getting out of hand. Anyone can rattle can thier car in flat black for a total investment of about $15 bucks. It's a cop-out for people that can't afford/don't want to take the time to learn, or don't have the $$$ for real bodywork...OR think flat black is the "rat rod look" - which it ain't if it's newer than 1952 or so, IMHO.

I had a friend in high school (circa 1991) that got in trouble with the law for a burnout he did in his 1973 Mustang Grande. Not even one of the "cool" old Mustangs. It was GOLD. Solution? Paint it flat black! That way the cops wouldn't notice him...he wasn't going for the "rat-rod" look, he was hiding from the law!

If I was in the situation that I was determining weather to fix the bodywork in my driveway and spray it all flat black...or leave it all alone, I would leave the rust scabs...trim...etc...until I had the cash to paint it...but that's just me. [IMG]

I wish 1/2 the guys on the HAMB lived by me...I would just spend my weekends doing paint jobs at a cut rate...and I'd be WAY better then MAACO or Earl Schieb...and STILL make money...plus, I'd like to school some people! Maybe I should hold my own "how to paint your car other than with rattlecans" lessons...

I feel bad for guys that are afraid of bodywork/paint...to me, it ain't that hard...if you've ever done drywall/painted a room in a house it's the same concept...spackle/prime/sand/spakle/prime/sand...or is that just me?

I know it costs a little to buy the right stuff to do bodywork...but in the end, after you spend the initial investment, you HAVE the stuff for life...hell, you'll probably upgrade right away anyways once you find out what works well and what doesn't..and once people know you do paint and body work; if you want it, the work is out there...

I guess this is an open invite to any Michigan HAMBers who want to learn body work and have no definite time frame (the Merc has priority over all else) to drop me a line...when I start doing the bodywork on the Merc, anyone who wants to drop by and see what's going on is more than welcome...

If you have a car that YOU think is ready to paint, (and is local to me in Royal Oak, MI) let me know. (I'll look over your car and see if it is indeed ready for paint) & for a nominal fee, I'll shoot it for you. (Bodywork is up to you unless you want to PAY!) [IMG]

First off I never said I was going to rattlecan my car black when I started this post.
Second I've been working on this car all winter, here's a picture of the tub in my garage a month or so ago.

ppg makes a nice corrosion resistant primer that is tintable in a whole slew of colors. so what i'm saying is it would be easy to focus on knocking out the roof and spraying it in white with a little flake throwm in. and then spray the whole body with the ppg primers and work out a panel at a time respraying the panel you just worked so that it blends to the rest. make sense? sometime i don't explain things to well. that may be what happens on the plymouth since i know i'm spraying the roof first since i'll be climbing all over it alying out the scallops on the roof. the ppg is a little on the pricy side but goes a pretty long way and is corrosion resistant. primer is porous and can absorb water you figure out what happens underneath then. that car is surely way to cool for satin black. i am and i'm sure lownslow is dying sitting thinking of what i could do with that car. ah the candies and the the flake dancing around in my head. i'll also bet that if you take it like i say bye the time you finish you'll have the body skill down. as far a colors i actually really like the pale yellow for body at least in primer stage and it would work with your interior for now to. i would say vveeerrryyy pale yellow. or maybe a pastel sky blue like the HOK sky blue used on my buick which i will try and post a pic of for the 100th time recently. thats a cool car the biggest thing i see that i would do differently would be skinny whites as i just don't like wide whites and esp. on 60s cars. i bet if you gave a good side shot in a post asking nicely one of the photoshop guys would give you some good examples to go by. anyhow cool car to bad you live to far away i could really have fun with that thing sitting in my shop...ken....

Steve K, fill out your profile already! I'm wondering if you are the 455 Corvair guy that is in Phoenix.

  22. For what it's worth...with a tan interior you can do some sorta green paint and that'll still look nice. Or maybe just a swankier shade of the original color...you know...a little more metallic in it or maybe some green pearl over it.?!!!? Make sense? Hang in there...you do seem to be taking all this in good stride! [IMG] Kinda overwhelming, I'm sure, but it'll be worth it in the end.

  23. Luckystiff, nice Buick. If I go with yellow it will be a pale yellow. I saw a nice '59 El Camino last year the was painted a satin yellow and the top of the car was a gold metalflake with red metalflake flames, real nice.

Barnett, I was kicking around the idea of some kind of green also. I have a picture of a slammed 2-toned mid 50's Lincoln that I like, I'm sure you all have seen the car, it's been in few magazines and on some web sites, but I like that too.

After seeing how much work you've put into this thing already I would hate to see it with anything less than a kick ass paint job. And it looks like you have the patience. Maybe find a nice solid color to start with. Paint it and wet sand and buff it out. Then work on some panels and the roof. Have faith in your skills. I like Barnetts idea of the green. Maybe a color similar to Elpolacko's truck.

Nice looking car, looks like you are off to a good start.

First off Welcome - you will do fine here. Just settle on the name.

From your hesitance on shine, I am guessing that the bottom half below the belt line has had some serious work done to it along with shaving the body side molding. Run it in primer and see how much shrinkage you get before doing the $$devine shine$$. At least you can fix problems as they pop up and shoot it for the next weekend. If the roof is done with out any major work go ahead and flake it. Also, scallops and seaweed flames go along way to hide minor flaws.

  28. what would you guys recomend for someone in need of getting some sort of paint on their car before the weather takes it toll. Now this someone does not have an air compressor nor a paint gun, and all his friends who paint live 100's of miles away now. what do you do, just not even drive it?? I dont think so, so someone give me some cheap alternatives. again no paint gun or compressor and its not going to happen anytime soon. any ideas ??
