You had to hear him to understand. He was, no make that IS a legend. Always will be. Bigger than life.

Rock & Roll? Alan Freed mainstreamed it. And The Wolfman brought it to you dleivered with soul to radios across the country.

Still love that kid on the call in from Graffiti.

Radio and DJs were different back then,I used a Halicrafters receiver to listen to far away stations.
WTOD 1560 would quit broadcasting in the evening and if the conditions were right I could pull in 1570 and the Wolfman and listen to music our local stations didn't play.
Radio was better before big corporations made it cookie-cutter style broadcasting.
Good post! makes for a lot of nice memories

I've got a couple of Car Show posters from the 60's that have his face on them and was a guest appearance for these Sultans Car Shows from back in the day. I will dig them out and take a look at them as they are pretty damn cool.

From an old guy, in the old days, the radio DJ spoke to us, he had a theme song played when he came on and when he left the air, when you heard your favorite theme song, the volume went up on the radio. The DJ had personality, he talked about things, he was one of your friends, you looked foreward to his two or three hour stretch because you wanted to hear what he had to say today, and he played the greatest music ever. Yes,there were commercials, but nothing like today.

As one of the guys said before, Wolfman's biography is a good read. One of the guys in our car club does a oldies radio show and he kept telling me to read that book. So I found a copy of HAVE MERCY! on ebay and it was worth every penny I paid for it. I recommend it highly.

Here in Ventura, Ca. we get to listen to the Wolfman on KVEN. His wife collected all his sound bites and electronically he still lives, it's great this day and age (sometimes).
