OK OK the family is refusing to go with me until I get my pipes fixed. The 54 Chevy is stock in every way, I really want to put a good exhaust on it something that sounds good as well as last long.I like the Fenton Cast Headers, but are a bit pricey for me at the moment(any good used ones out there?). Has any body ran the tube headers with sucsess?? If so what brand and who did you buy them from.Next what size pipe is best for a stock engine. Also I've heard some people saying run staight pipes all the way out????Also what mufflers, if this is the way to go.. I thought about Smithy's but I put a part store 16 inch gl*** pack on there when I band-aided and it sounds ok, any other's that sound good.. Alot of questions I know but I want other opinions from those who have done it before I spend the cash and am upset with the sound ....thank's in advance..Ryan
i run a straight pipe on my stock 250 all the way back, its a 2" and its not very loud at all, the guy who put it on left a nice straight spot so if i needed to i could add a muffler, but after about 4 months now i have no plans for a muffler, maybe a split manifold would be louder.
I just have the regular manifold on mine with an older smithys muffler. I like the sound of it. NCA sells fenton headers for $290, about as low as anywhere. If you wanna cough up some cash they do a whole kit w/ everything from headers to exhaust tips w/ gl*** or steel mufflers for 600. Ive seen cars w/ fentons and dual gl*** packs. Sound unique and tough, but not too loud.
I'm just wishing my 235 sounded like it was running... the muffler the last guy put on there is effing huge... you can hardly hear it running! I'm low on funds, so I might cut the muffler out of there and clamp in a cherrybomb... not sure though... should I try it with no muffler/packs at all first?
check out these sites. nice people with lots of info on sixes. www.stoveboltengineco.com, www.Inliners.org. good luck!

Doesn't make alot of difference. I have a cherry bomb on mine and it's not alot different than the muffler that was on it. They are nice and cheap though.
I pulled the muffler off my 235, because I could not hear the car running. Just running straight pipe all the way back, not too loud.
Ive got stock exhaust ona 216 but with a short cherry bomb and it sounds pretty good once the cherry bomb gets "broken in", it really pops good on the overrun.... Though I do have a set of Fentons to put on
Thank's for the input guy's still thinking of going with a tube header and a 1 3/4" straight's all the way back. But not sure if it's gonna sound like a total rattle trap by doing this. All I know is that I need to get it fixed soon, I cannot afford the loss of any more brain cell's....
Fentons on my 216,12" gl*** packs with1-3/4 pipe out the back, sounds good, not too loud and raps great, doesn't bother the hell out of you down the highway either....or sound like a rice burner!
I've used the tube split headers by Hot Rods of Norco with success. If you're running your own exhaust, get ready for some frustration with that steering arm and e-brake bracket! Running straight out with no muffler or baffle isn't too loud, really. Sounds like a tractor to me at idle.
We used the Fentons and complete exhaust kit from NCA and it worked great... well, I got sick of waiting from the headers from NCA (many months) and got them from STovebolt instead and NCA refunded my money. The kit bolted right in and it sounded great. I also got the water heat kit from Stovebolt. Worked great. If Fenton is too much, you could have Crestliner split your stock manifold (sounds the same) or try this place http://www.fastpts.com/cgi-bin/hazel-cgi/hazel.cgi?action=serve&item=hrheader.html
