My wife and I went to VSCDA (Vintage Sports Car Drivers ***oc) racing in Road America/Elkhart Lake, WI as part of our honeymoon. It's a lot of fun. The weather was a little colder this year and there weren't as many cars, but it was still fun. Mustangs were featured on Friday and I think a Porsche club hosted something on Saturday. We didn't walk around in the paddock as much this year, but watched more racing instead. Here are some of the pics and videos. Some race team came in this 1951 Flixible that was converted to some sort of touring bus in 1961 and later restored. The team was there racing a gorgeous flathead Ford v8-powered Allard and some Mustang. These guys also had a cool mint green car like this (Morgan, I think) that was running circles around the other cars in its cl***. This car was torn down later on. vintage open wheel road racing! Better than going in a short, straight line, or going round and around in an oval! The Go Speed Racer Go! Cl***, as I liked to call it During the lunch break they allow street cars and amateurs run a few laps, but with a speed limit. Someone let their 18 year old kid out on the track with a very expensive race car... and he decided to gun it coming around this corner... and lost control and hit the wall, bounceed off, and hit again. Elizabeth said that the way the kid was curled up in the fetal position and screaming, it probably wasn't his car. I missed all of the action because I was getting a drink  Corvettes and Mustangs
I shot some video, too, but I forgot to resize it and they didn't turn out too good, but the sound is great! uncorked Volvos, Porsches and Minis! the really old cars... putt putt putt These guys look slow, but were very fast for their cl***... and were p***ing Morgans like they were standing still. Watch until the very end for a really great rap. I didn't see this car on the track, but I heard a guy who I ***umed was the owner saying he was looking for a show to take it to where it would be appreciated. I was about to tell him about the Pileup when I realized he was talking about a MODEL car show! Here's that Morgan torn apart. The guy said something about a problem with a piston Here's my favorite car... a Cheetah! I think it was running a 350, but it sounded MEAN. It didn't handle corners too well, but it p***ed everything on the straightaways! This car wrecked or otherwise died on the track More racing action Cheetah and Corvettes adn finally, here's the flathead powered Allard
did you happen to snap any pics of a yellow two tone morgan out there? I did part of the restoration work on that car 2 years ago and haven't made it out there to get some pics of it for myself.
Elkhart Lake is a great vintage track. And thats great stuff. Were the Black Tie Racing guys there? They race a 57, 58, and 59 Vette. Also, that Allard is one of three. I met a guy who had one, you don't happen to know its history do you? The Green car is a MG J type (I think) BTW.
I saw a few late 50s/early 60s vettes racing, but I didn't see who they were racing with. Last year the guy with the Allard had a placcard up with info, but I didn't see it this year and I don't remember much from last year TehGerg, I saw that one, but I didn't get any pics on the track and I didn't see it in the paddock.
I forgot to mention that Elizabeth felt the twins kick for the first time while we were watching the races. She said it felt like clutch/gas movements! She had an ultrasound today and one of the twins looks like s/he is pretending to hold a steering wheel
Stunning track - would love to wring an open wheeler around that thing! Butch - what were you racing, something vintage or an SCCA open wheeler like an Atlantic or FC?
Other than the lunch time touring, apparently they do have some sort of open racing days. I don't have anything fast, but I'd love to drive the track... but after seeing that kid wreck that Cobra, I'm not sure I'd want to be on the track with any other amateurs!
Great pics! ,yes the 'Morgan' is an MG Midget,Morgans are somewhat bigger. I loved the 'S series' 4WD Bedford Truck.Reminds me of the New Zealand army days
the morgans built around the time of the J2/4 cars I think were still 3 wheelers, though still plenty fast.
Neat pix..........thanks......didn't "Clark" have a supercharger like the one in the MG a while back? Chris Nelson Kansas
The bus, black Allard and orange Mustang belonged to John Safro of Safro Toyota fame (he also owns a Moal built-i think-'32 with the cool bodywork). The red Cheetah belongs to Mark Ulinski from Racine Harley. There was talk of him doing another car or two. The Cheetah expereinced some minor front end fibergl*** damage in Friday practice. The track has a couple of oppurtunities for us mortals to drive on it at speed. Midwest F-body club does two weekends a year there. NASA did a track day. Plus you can always throw money at a race car to get out there. We are running with Midwest Council this weekend - #93, red spec-Miata.
