Finally finished up building the rear end for my coupe. It's a late 50's--early 60's truck housing, narrowed, Richmond 4.11 gears, traction lock, Moser axles, Wilson finned plates, and Buick drums. Took a while to get it all together, but I think it turned out killer. Actual progress again!
schwing...good lookin drums, backing plates, etc. will look even better when it has a painted car to make them stand out that much more
Thanks, dreddybear!! It's gonna be a while before I cut mine to length, but that's another piece of info for the back of my mind. Know what I mean?
No worries bro. In my A I'm running a 9" out of a 59 ranchero. The flange to flange on that is about an inch wider (53"), and should work good for ya too. Sciflyer's was that width, but he narrowed it about an inch to account for his wide five adapters (about a 1/2 inch each side) and snug those baby's up against the body. It looks sick as hell and quite frankly I'm a little jealous. Though it's nothing years of therapy won't cure
Here's what I have: 9" housing and tubes (unwelded) from Currie/9+; no brakes or housing ends to speak of; and a 3.50:1 geared aluminum big bore center section with a locker, set up for 31 spline axles. As far as getting it all looking "right", I had planned to mock everything up after the body and frame are ready, and then whittling down the axle tubes little by little. Kind of a pain doing it that way, but I only want to do it once. Of course, with the 52" dimension in my head, now I have a number to work from. It's all still a long way off...
Hey Jack, I'm headed to the shop in the morning, and I'll measure it for ya. To tell the truth, I don't even remember!! I set it up pinion center. On the p***enger side, I had a 1/2" taken off. Then the driver side cut to match it. Several inches came off of the driver side. There was alot of math involved, and once it was done I kinda blanked it. I think the width is perfect, so I must known what I was doing a few months ago when all the measuring happened! I have a wide front end, so I wanted to make sure it was wider than that. Tire face to tire face, its about 1 1/2" wider on both sides in the rear.
Thanks, sciflyer72!! I really appreciate it... I went through the same thing on my '56. Just kept cutting it down more and more. I got it to within 1/16" side-to-side, and called it good. Of course, doing that under a panel truck with only two feet on either side of the vehicle make it a bit of a trying experience. I'm hoping the coupe goes a little more smoothly.
Sicflyer 72 That rear looks great. Would it be to much to ask for address, ph.#'s and any information to help with the build to dupicate? Thanks Dan
"Then I whipped out my Big 9 Inch!" Sorry...I know how much you love Aerosmith (But the song is a cover...I just can't remember who played it first.) Looks KILLER! But I have a question.... WHERE THE HELL DID THE ROOF, DECKLID, AND "FILLERPANELBETWEENTHEROOFANDDECKLIDTHINGY" GO? I like this MUCH more than your original idea.
LUX, once I braced the body, I took out the rear window section to finish putting the *** end back on. The rear filler and decklid haven't "become" part of the car for real yet. I know it looks like I'm moving backward, but it took several months to make the rear end happen (and pay for it!). While I waited for parts and money, I was helping Alec work on this:
9 inch housing and Buick drums: Junkyard, ebay, friends, craigslist. Finned plates: Wilson Welding and Machine Axles: Moser-ordered straight from them Gears: Richmond from Summit Third member/traction lock: Swap meet score (Thanks Buzzard and LUX!) Find a guy who has a jig and knows WTF he is doing to narrow it, or borrow his jig. Have plenty of cash ready! Oh yeah, I did have to have some machine work done to the plates to make everything fit smoothly.
OH MAN!!! OH MAN!!! That looks SERIOUSLY good!! I really wish you wouldn't have brought this to my attention! I'm not going to sleep at night after seeing that! You have great taste!
Whoops!! I posted before I looked at the Wilson Welding page. They make the backing plates for big bearing 9" housing ends. It looks like Riley's Automotive carries the Wilson Welding products. I wonder if he could get the big bearing plates?
My buddy Doyle got them from someone he uses, can't remember who. They're billet steel, very heavy-duty. Oh yeah, its 51 3/4" from outside the flange to outside the flange.
So what's this business about a differential lock to act as an e-brake since the finned backing plates aren't offered with e-brake provisions?? Fill us in sciflyer...
It's "Big 10 inch record of the band that plays the blues", Bull Moose Jackson. It looks great, even if it is only 9".
