Seeing more and more Hot Rods with paint now,is primer becoming passe?? Also colors seem to be trending towards Grays , Greens, Dk. Blues, Whats your take??
I think it's losing some popularity(maybe a good thing), but it'll go out of style about the same time "black with flames" does.
I work for a Mercedes and BMW Tuner and 30 cars at the German Auto show last week were flat paint, and we are going to have 2 cars in our booth at SEMA this year that are FLAT BLACK a 3 series BMW and a Mercedes...so now the European Car Manufactures are doing it to new cars!!!!! So you tell me!!! I will take shiny paint on all my cars!!! John
Its always worked for those of us too poor for paint, or just not quite ready for it yet, while we work on the mechanicals...like myself. always will...better than rusty metal...and ya' need it in btwn. your sanding...cars built to perform have always been, (if both could not be a priority straight away) built with the operation of it first. This is backwards, of course to the typical custom approach. Its also the reason that rust IS traditional... if you were trying to haul ass first! not everyone one was trying to get laid, or build movie cars...some folks just wanted whatever they had to s-c-r-e-a-m...
Hey as long as prostreet, Supertrapp mufflers, dual wiper blades, celica taillights, fake cellphone antennas, and hot pink and and turquoise graphics don't come back I don't really car if your car is shiney or not.
When I was 15 in 1957 all I could afford was primer spots. Now that I'm 66 and retired I can afford to primer the whole car!
we are about the same age...........i remember the first order of business was some primer "spots" it was a fad then,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,very few cars were all primer{So Cal} None were all Rust !~!
o.k....now ALL rust is the other end of the spectrum, alltogether... even a racecar had started life wearing something other than bare metal...
All this concern over trends and styles becoming passe is passe... Primer is cool. Shiney paint is cool. Just build the damn car the way you think it looks good...
jimmy crack corn and i don't give a damn! as a side note. i have painted some stuff before without using primer!
I'm currently doing concept illustrations on an new Audi A-4 (race car look for the street, complete with carbon fiber hood, air dams, rear wing and side ducts)...the client insists he wants flat blak...with colored accents... Oh well, the client is paying the bill... R-
Maybe you should start anew trend for others to copy. Spray your pretty color as a base coat ... THEN primer it. You can thank me later for making you a trend setter.
some of my cars are primer spots, some are all primer and 1 is painted.....i'm all over the place. i was going to paint the '36 stock for grey/green and it's worn red rims for years now. but then again i like to be un-fashionable......
I'll take primer over a faux patina look anyday. I'm a painter by trade and nothing looks more ignorant than a beautiful looking car or truck with a brand new paint job that somebody felt the need to wetsand through to show a weathered look. so, yeah, I'll take the primer over a ruined paint job. d.d.t.
Paint or primer, they are both good ways to coat your ride. It all depend on the car and style of the body which addresses which route to take.
