On an external regulator, i have 4 terminals.... my question is on the "F" terminal, that goes to the feild post, should that show power when the key is on? I'm ***uming it should, but I'm unsure of wether power should be coming from the alt to the regulator or vice versa. don't want to buy a new regulator if the alt is the problem! "A" term has constant power, and the "s" term has switched power, so i think i'm good otherwise, just not sure about that "f" term.... thanks!
well, it wasn't a charging issue that caused my problems today... unrelated completely really, the car was using that "f" circuit to turn on the elec fan as well, and the overheating came in before any charging problem did... I just need to know if the power in that circuit comes from the regulator or from the alternator, because i'm 99% sure that it had to be a power source prior to today...
With four terminals on the regulator, you must have an old alternator. On a rod, when wired correctly, one terminal will stay unused. It has been so many years I dont remember which one. Sorry.
yes, one terminal is unused on mine too, but there are still the I A S F terminals available. A S & F are all i'm using...
already done, and it wasnt the "actual" power, just the switched power for the fan, but I still would like to know if that terminal should definitely show power before I take the car out again... seems better to fix now than to have a dead battery next time i'm out!
I have been having charging issues with my 61 Merc generator. The gen is new sounds like this is an easy way to check on the volatge regulator. Will this work with a generator?
decided to just try a new regulator, new one fixed it and shows power at the F terminal... $14 well spent!
