I got this banjo steering wheel today 'cause I think it'll be nice for my '34 Chevy project. Only thing is I don't know it's origin. Anybody have any clues?
OK...that's cool... Thanks Rocketeer I'm still gonna use it for my '34 in any case because I think it should look cool...or what do you think?
yeah the triumph steering wheel also looks kool ! Even Cole Foster used one similar in Hammetts 36 ! Morris are cheaper and easier to get, thou.
Even here in South Africa the Morris wheel will be easier to get as it was a popular car here. People are still rebuilding them to a large extent and most, who don't go original, put some late model high-performance motor in. Those are usually the ones who'll through out the original steering wheel. There was another wheel I looked at and decided on the Morris wheel though. The other one's spoke direction were very similar to this Triumph's but had 5 spokes horizontal and only three vertical. Any idea on that one? I've already got another Morris part for use on my project and that's a pair of trafficators/semaphores which I'll build into the grill shell for use as front turn signals. A small modification to them will mean that their bulbs will flash too instead of just a static on when activated.
It's a Morris Minor. Got one identical to it (except mine has all the grip intact) in my 31 Plymouth. Mine came out of a 59 roadster, but all the Minors I've seen have the same wheel. I had to turn a stub that would slip into my 49 Studebaker truck column and taper it, then cut a keyway and threads to mount it. I haven't made the center yet, but am going to cast a chunk of aluminum to machine out a bullet center.
While we're on the subject, anybody recognize this one? Is it desirable? Is it worth my time to restore it and sell on Ebay?
It sounds like it could be a Volvo steering wheel from circa 1950-57, but did you get Volvos in South Africa at that time?
I have some Volvo banjo steering wheels, I can take pictures of them when I come home (that will take a few days) so you have some pics to compare your wheel to.
I used a early NOS MG steering wheel and fiddle filed on it a bit ,then put 40 ford horn ****on . MG used the same wheel well into the 1960 s the later ones are plastic and dont crack and paint up nice.
