  4. Years back happened by the dumpster at work and there was one in it. Said WTF and of course pulled it out. Wish I'd kept it now. Didn't have a model A at the time.

I just got one for free that is supposed to be a 30-31 lid that needs a new skin (not selling it). What is the difference between 28-29 and 30-31 lids?

the inside (as far as looks only) is the difference from what i know... oddly enough, i have a 28-29 for my 30-31 it fits, just looks different inside as far as whole pattern and all go on the inner part... (make any sense? cause i lost myself)

I think what happened the trunk lids were pulled off and used as A) stoneboats ( rocks or roots picked from the field would be placed on the stoneboat and pulled off the field with a tractor) or B) used as a toboggan. In both cases they would never be seen again.....

Anyone besides me pick roots (or rocks) when they were a kid????

I have 8 bodies (coupes/spt coupes/roadsters) but only have 4 complete and 2 half lids.

If you do go repro (whole or skin), get the Brookville. They are very nice. Don't get a Howell skin. They are flat and not the correct size.

The decklids went to the same place as all the truck doors. They were taken off so the vehicle would be easier to use.
In the 50s it was common to see pickups being driven around town with no doors and coupes with no deck lid, being used as trucks.

So where are the doors and decks? mostly thrown in the trash

A friend did call me from the Canton Texas flea market (not an automotive swap meet, just garage sale junk)
He said there was a rusty door there that the owner thought was Ford.
He described it over the phone and I authorized him to give $50 for it.
It is the much sought 26-27 Model T/28-29 Model A pickup door
and it is the drivers side.
The same friend attends other garage sale junk/flea markets and after he looked at and p***ed on a wood box, I gave $15 for KRW oil groove cutters for Model A babbitt bearings

Lots of folks converted their coupe or roadster to a pickup during wwII as they could get more gas rations. Also, I think, taxes were cheaper for a pickup. Most people back during that time never thought that old Fords would ever become collectible so the deck lids were used a sleds or thrown in the s**** heap.

no way. ya learn something new every day and there it is. ive heard of the whole cars turn into trucks because of the war rationing but the story about people chucking the doors off the trucks never see or heard that before

  18. Sure... but I'm going to need my arm and my leg to drive the darned car...:)

  19. This actually makes a quite a bit of sense to a point... but it was really strange seeing the nearly complete "barn-car" on e-pay with one missing as well... oh well, maybe they had rocks to skid.

    <img src = "http://i1.ebayimg.com/02/i/000/b2/65/081d_3.JPG">

    Anyone familiar with these? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...m=300151622709&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=020
$475 seems a bit spendy for this project... but.

i'm in the same boat, no trunk lid on my 29 sport coupe been having a really hard time tracking one down as well.

  21. Maybe all of us that need one should start a "buyers group" and then
DEMAND a major discount when we purchase 28 or 29 of them.

After watching some of the Tinman videos, I'm thinking that a sheet of .05 Aluminum and a session w/an English wheel, er...make that
    Al-lu-min-ium! :D would be proper.

Yep, they were converted to trucks during the war. Cheaper to register, more useful for the family that could only have one car.

Besides, they made a billion of the things, why would anyone ever want one? ;)

Yup, I did it when I was in jr. high. We didn't use a Model A trunkid though, just the bucket loader on the front of the tractor. If we were to use one off an A, it would be in my garage on my coupe!!!

Uhh, Sorry boys..... I happen to have one out in the garage, but it is for my kids '29.... Had to cut off the bottom 6" and replace it, but at least I have a halfway decent one......

Didn't mean to sound like "HAHA! I have one and you don't", but you asked where they were hiding.....

  28. OK Guys, I'll admit I have one Stashed. I also have a Roadster project with one on it. Not sure why I need a spair but as hard as they are to come by I'm keeping it. I didn't buy it, it came with my Coupe as a replacement for the rusted one it was wearing. Sold the Coupe, kept the deck lid.
