  3. It looks like he was real lucky Kenny was right beside him. He was really accelerating accross the track directly at the wall. It would have been real bad had he not hit the other car. They were both very lucky.

I am glad he is OK. You really gotta be brave to drive one of those things.

    doubt it.
aftyer seeing the interview with her after it happened, she wouldn't have been worth a damn (understandably)...
    i don't fault the decision a bit.

both force and bernstein are class acts...

I also think that Bernstien threw the 1000ft timing light into Forces tire. I'm interested to find out how the frame was cut in half too.

Force never hit Bernstien. The chassis and engine did. The cockpit, with Force still in it, was no longer attached to anything when the collision happened. Reminded me of the Jim Nicoll incident at Indy when the driverless, front half of the chassis went sliding down track past Prudhomme.

It was scary. Just glad he's going to be OK.

Here are my 2 cents on what happened. It appears to me that the right rear tire chunked, and subsequently failed (lost pressure). When this happened the chassis broke at the motor plate (the cars are designed to break there). Eventhough the chassis was broke, the car continues to stay together. When the chutes came open and hit, the resulting force stopped the back half of the car, but since the chassis was broke the front half kept going, turned left and took out Kenny. In the video it appears that the back half is yanked out from underneath the car. Pretty crazy stuff. Its hard to see what happened to the back half of the car in the videos, but I am sure it bounced along for a bit before coming to rest.

  11. Thanks for the update -- I too believe that John Force is one of the best racers we have in NHRA . . . always has time for the crowd, for the TV cameras, etc.. Even when he is having a tough time -- always has a positive outlook. Hurry back John . . . you're missed already.

  12. But it didn't brake at the motorplate. It broke right at the front of the seat! Kinda like what happened to Alex Zanardi, with his legs hanging out.

After a couple Top Fuel cars folding in half during a run, last year,
and Force's car breaking in half in the wrong place,it's past time
for NHRA and SFI to step up and make these cars significantly safer.

I think its time the NHRA stopped "self inspecting" and used 3rd party inspection of cars like some other motorsports do........

well, thats just nice! i hadn't heard anything about it either till i seen this post.... i was working and no TV's in the tractors...sorry your panties got all up in your crack! take a break man...no need to shot yourself, when theres more stupid threads to bash then a legendary drag racer getting hurt! i will start one soon enough thats lame...go bash it!;) really, I'm sure i will....fuckin booze!:( :p :(

  24. Glad he's going to be okay(well,as ok as John can be).If anyone can be back for the next race, against those odds it will be that nut(and i mean that only in a good way)NHRA tech is very thorough but sometimes a chassis just has enough,if anyone thinks an outside inspection team should be introduced, i disagree.NHRA Tech is the best group to understand these cars and probably anyone else would be playing a "catchup role"for far too long to keep up with the pace of the constant development of the modern fuel car. Get Well Soon John!!!

Watch the video again and take note the safety safary and crew truck is THERE before the parts stop sliding. I'll put $$ down that he's driving in 2 weeks.

That's what John Force's Eric Medlin Project is all about.
It's good to see he's going to be OK. It's a guarentee that he will turn this into a positive experiance in some way.
Only met him once in Lansing when he was under the Oldsmobile banner and I've been a fan since he was just a Bridesmaid.
Bet he's tough to work for but I'd love to be on that project.

after reading this latest article and interview with Force, and watching the video again for the umpteenth time I finally saw something I had been missing. The camera follows the front half of Forces car as it goes across and hits Bernstein but for about half a second after the blowout you can see Forces chutes open the the rear of his car go to the left before it goes out of camera view. All the time I thought he had hit the right hand guard rail.

  30. I think what Beatnik may be referring to is the fact that some folks post (excitedly in this case) without checking to see if the info is already on the board. Hard to miss when it's on page one (twice) and then there's the search feature...:) I'm pretty sure it had nothing to do with the crash.

I'm a huge JF fan and have been for years. I was at Rt 66 a few years ago at the Friday night qualifying session. As Top Fuel was running and the funny cars were in the staging lanes I was looking down from the top of the stands between runs. A guy was pushing his infant son in a stroller across the lanes enroute to the stands when he spots Force. The guy stops, searches his multiple bags and finds a t-shirt. He asks for an autograph and John obliges. The guy holds it out in front of him and gazes at it in awe for almost a full minute before turning around to put it back into the bag hung on the stroller but the stroller is gone! John pushed the infant up the staging lanes to show-off to all of the ladies in the push vehicles. The guy spun in several circles before spotting Force and then ran to get his kid.:D I missed a couple of runs as this went down but I was enthralled with the antics.
