I own a 1950 chevy pickup with a 1952 gmc 228 engine. Anybody running this setup? Are they good engines? School me please. Heres some pics of my progress.
Yes 228 got more power than the car motor that was in your truck Find a long oil pan and drill that block for a full flow filter Get rid of the Fentons .... Nicson 3'' cast iron dumps Get the Wayne dress-up stuff from www.ardun.com Enjoy the ride My 228 got about 25mpg on the road with the two carb setup
Few more things Put a hole in the firewall so you can get the rear freeze plug on the head Run a line from the back of the head to the heater connection on the thermo housing So the water can continue to flow when you shut the motor off. This will keep it from pukin' on a hot day in some parkin lot and make it easier to get the cooling system filled See if you can find a water pump with a cast iron pulley the stamped ones can fall apart on you without warning Never use the cam gear again once you remove it....... use a new gear every time
Bluto, how much do the intake/exhaust ports differ from the Chevy 216/235 head? (Maybe they don't at all, not sure--don't know much about the GMC sixes.) I like how the Ellis manifold mounts the 1bbls transversely.
So Bob in his red running pants ran. He had no idea THAT was what Jimmy meant about seeing his "long motor"...
the gmc takes the same bell hsg as the chevy 6. the 228 is the smallest of the gmc. a 270 the same in all areas. intake/exhaust. bellhsg. the gmc is 2 " longer than the chevy. the 302 is the top of the line and most desireable. 302,s all come stock w/2 barrells. intake manifold has bigger ports on the 302 and flywheel must be 302.
No the truck is not finished yet, it will be painted someday. Sorry about the pictures being out of order.
Good motors. Rather than look for a 228 I'd look for a 270 or a 302, but the 228/248 are still great motors. I do have both a 248 and a 270 and would love to have a 302 with the same accessories you have on that 228.
Nice project. good to see more people gettig into the old GMC six. I run one in my modified and would love one of those ELLIS manifolds as that is my last name.
Okay, just out of academic curiosity, as Bluto mentioned 25 MPG W/ his 228 I was wondering what anyone has gotten with a 270 or a 302 similarly equipped.
That's easy 302 with all the same stuff on it SAME TRUCK... 10 if I'm lucky and it breaks everything from trans-axles-diffs. I finally put in a kevlar clutch and a very large Ford gearbox I'm gonna sell this 302 and box...... go back the 228 and Volvo O/D Made plenty of power for my old PU and drove like a sports car There is little chance of getting the power down in a pick-up on the high crown roads here.......and when it's wet you look like Mr Toad's ride here trying to squirt just enough to keep it hooked up! Did I mention the $9 a gal gas? yup!
9 bucks, YEOWCH! I was just wonderin' cause dad and I have a 1950 MC w/ the 228 in it and I was wondering about range. I have a line on a couple 302's and a 270.
you been on oldgmctrucks.com yet? They'd love to see that ride! Nice work, Boss. Keep the Fentons, they sound ***s!
