Hello! New guy here. Trying to plan my own project but I need to know what to even call the type of car that I have posted attachments of. I have a bunch of other pictures. That way I can do research on it and plan. Specifically I am looking for information about the frame and suspension. I need someone to build it or be able to source parts. I am looking to build an engine, add a custom vicky 5 window body and do all of my own interior. Any help that all of you HAMB experts would have is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Christian

  2. All those are model A's. They would probably be called Rat rods though some do tend to lean toward the traditional side. Rat rods don't go over to well here. If you want a traditional car along those lines, and need help with the build, I could help you out. I'm in Sedalia MO. Email me, Dean

They are called dead ***y. Rat Rod is a common term, but that will start a **** storm like "bobber" will over on jockeyjournal.com.

Thanks for initiation evel. and the info. Did do a intro btw. Loved the pics from billetproof. Want to do something different and this lowered setup is the perfect base. I am looking to put a complete finished painted body on mine. Trying to know some of the ugly off. I know that a lot of you guys dont like the non-traditional cars, but chopping cars is not a crime, right?

Any help on finding who owns one of these rat rods and getting me in touch with them would be great. or just plain old helping me out with a frame and suspension would be great.

    No problem..

But for real most of those car have a "Suicide" front end and allot of "Z" ing
you are in the right place to ask questions and you should be able to find info using the "Search"
feature.. Also read all you can on Hot Rods..Especially old mags like Hot ROd,
Car Craft,,Etc.. You will notice that most of the cars were not built like that..
This "New" Ratty lower than hell Shocking Factor is somthing that has surfaced in the past few years...

Do the research and make sure thats what you want to build before you jump in...Also TOOLS!!! Get allot of Tools..you'll need them..if you did a budget on what you want to spend add 10 grand to that.

Also rember that Stance is the most importan thing in building a car
    Stanc! Stance! Stance!!!

Also "Form Follows Funtion" ...Look it up.

    Hope that helps..
    evel

    P.S. their also called Retarted.

I can't really understand why someone would want to build a car that is unstreetable.

There's always somebody gotta be hateful to a newbie instead of "spread the gospel".
I hate "rat-rods" as much as anybody on here, but we can convert many more by explaining our ways than being ****ty to them.

  14. www.killbillet.com has info on these type of cars. That said, there is lots of info here you can also put to good use, just don't ask about "Rat Rods" specifically. A solid axle with '40 Ford brakes is a solid axle with '40 ford brakes, it doesn't know if it is on this:

Evel, funny stuff but your spelling ****s! Totally lost the virtual impact.

mustangmaniac, Evel is correct on the research. Sounds like you are a year or two out on gathering parts anyway. See what your local library has on hot rods, pick up a handful of magazines at the book store to get some inspiration. My library has a book with the first 12 issues of Hop Up magazine from the 1950's.

Don't get crazy and jump into a project until you know what you are getting to! Find what fits you and your style not just the first old car that you can afford.

    Welcome, Christian

I am another fng, and I can probably help you source some parts. There are some great places to find bodies, frame and suspension, and a ton of old drivetrain pieces between here and KC.

PM me if you have decided on what style/period/project you are looking to get into.

And I would definitely buy a fair amount of tools, specifically sheetmetal tools, and learn how to use them. It may initially blow your budget, but it will save you money in the long run and you will be happier doing the work yourself.

    Later, F'n-100

The RR term is now off limits here. Lets refer them as Rodent Droppings. You know, rodents drop them at night when us real Hot Rodders are asleep. We wake up and go out and find this **** all over the place.
Actually I think their cool to look at myself. More like a useless overpriced art object. To each his own. Hell I cant rag on em too much, they might be a potential customer.;)

My issue with those kind of cars in the first post, is that they look like they were built completely ignorant of basic automotive knowledge. The radiator hoses are above the radiator... think they'll ever stop overheating? You get a flat tire, you're laying frame. Imagine that happening at 40mph or faster. The angles on the frontends, rearends... it's like someone slapped it all together without knowing anything about cars. At best, they're fairground cruisers... no better than a trailer queen.

Glad to see the OP is wanting to build a painted car, instead of some trendy pile of **** that's going to be a joke in 10 years. Like suggested above, check out the old magazines, see how functional real hotrods were built, and make something timeless. Better to be a trendsetter, than a punchline.

Build a hot rod instead. Same amount of work, but it will actually still be cool in 10 years.

I think alot of people come to this site by first thinking these cars are cool and then as they learn more about things they back away from the extreme.

An eye for a good hot rod takes alot of looking at bad ones first.

My advice to the guy is to start collecting parts and reading. Think about what you want to do with the car. You can do burnouts and cruise around in a parking lot at a show pretty well with it but you've got to get the car there first, which involved driving it.

This sort of car is going to be tough to use as the real world is full of holes and speedbumps.

If after you've got all your part you still want to build this go ahead. I'd save the peices you cut out just in case you go to sell it later and everyone who looks at it wants it taller.

I'll bite...... in the OP's first post there is a black car with red wheels....... It has been said that cars of this type are "rat rod ****boxes", "unstreetable", "a waste of F'n time" etc. You get the drift. Folks have also fallen in love with DD by Littleman. Put those two cars side by side and now tell me why is one a ****box rat rod and the other an automotive masterpiece.

Truth be told I like both cars, just wondering where that line is.

    I believe Littleman's is a work in progress...and won't stay in rust/black primer...but I could be wrong.:D
