Damn, never heard that one before.

Probably would've been a good idea to grab a pen and paper and go write his plate number down while he stood there wondering what you were doin. Then let him know you got his phone number and plate so you will know where to find him if something does go down. At least make him think twice about following up on his threat.

With the internet it's pretty easy to find someone with only a little info on them.

There is nothing wrong with negotiating on price, but it's insulting to get crazy lowball offers like that.

I've had to list FIRM on prices to combat assholes like that...... or I just start really high on the price if I'm in the mood to play the game......

I'm glad you didn't loose your cool. I probably would have. I really hate selling anything anymore, especially from my house. I can't believe I've gotten this paranoid, but if I have something for sale I usually push it outside before they get there and close the garage door. I hate when people you don't know are eyeballing other stuff in your garage.

I find a lot of buyers seem to like wasting your time these days. I had a guy looking over a 312 y-block plus speed parts that I had for sale last year for over an hour. He then proceeds to offer less than 1/2 of what I'm asking for, saying he can get y-block parts off some guy 4 hours away etc. He was then surprised when I said politely said "no", closed the garage door and went back into the house. (BTW, he insisted on meeting at 7:30 AM on a Saturday morning because he was passing through)

Low-balling is one thing, but be realistic. Offering some ridiculous price just pisses the buyer off without threats. I now usually only sell stuff via word of mouth and no longer advertise. Apparently it's OK to call people at 10 or 11PM on a week night to inquire about the ad. Assholes.

Don't assume anything on the Buddies smirk. Years ago I knew a guy who could be a real arrogant asshole at times. Sometimes hard to keep the smirk from being a full blown LMAO when someone called his bluff. Yeah, I told him he was an asshole, didn't bother him. He's someone elses buddy now.

I've had some really wierd shit happen to me with people in the last year and a half...never have before, so I've never really had to think on my feet about stuff like this.
The last guy that screwed with me got an earfull, along with a whole line of customers in his gas station, and I was more that willing to back it up.
My fuse has gotten a lot shorter, and my reaction time a lot quicker...I don't tend to sit there and think "What the fuck just happened here? And how am I going to deal with it" anymore.

That guy deserved a kick in the balls so hard his children would have winced, and his buddy could either listen to the message for him (it would be something vague, but involve a swamp, wild hogs and a body), or deal with the crow bar inside the garage door.
Then I'd call the police and report two thugs just threatened to beat me up and steal what I was selling if I didn't sell it to them at half the price I was asking. The innocent homeowner who's never had a problem with the law or his neighbors could pull this off easily. Besides, who takes on two strangers, on their own property, unless it's self defense?

I've bought a ton of cars using this exact formula. You can low-ball and still be respectful.

Around here its only like a $186 dollar fine for a first offense assault charge. It would almost be worth it.

I can't stand people coming over to the house when I'm selling stuff. I don't have a lot of stuff in the garage, but I want to keep what I DO have!

If I'm selling a car and it runs and drives, I'll meet the buyer at a grocery store parking lot or something, away from the house. If I'm selling parts, I'll load them into my truck and meet them.

And lowballing somebody to get a better deal is one thing, but offering less than half of the asking price is insulting. If I hear an offer like that on something I'm selling, you can bet that I'm not selling to that guy.

I would rather give something away for free to a nice guy than be low-ball by a jerk. What about swap meets? my wife asks why I'm the only guy selling cheap. I just dont want to take the stuff back home and stash it away again. Some guys try to sell the same stuff for years. One guy tried to low-ball me in a locked running suburban on a set of mag wheels. He said he never paid even close to asking price. He knew I was getting mad. He just about got a free trip to fist-city

after being around shootings, stabbings, waking up in the ER, etc. over what was essentially a trivial matter my fuse has gotten longer as I age...the guy sounds like a definate dick but always keep things in perspective - not worth jeopardizing your freedom or your families well being over some assclown, asspilot, asshat, etc. (I love those, keep 'em coming! :) ) whenever dealing with anyone always keep an ace in the hole to protect your back, property, etc.
sure nothing wrong with venting alittle though about some jerk who pisses you off...

Trying to lowball you on the car is one thing. Threatening you, even in a non battery manner is an entirely different matter. Perhaps he was kidding, even if a really stupid joke?? Hopefully the guy is non-local and just disappears back into his hole...

  27. Reminds me of a story I heard when I lived in Orlando back in the 70's. An elderly lady had a real 32 3W in a falling down garage but wouldn't sell it. This guy had his wife call the poor woman and tell her she was with the City and the old woman had a week to dispose of the garage and its contents or the City would condemn it. She was naturally upset, and guess who was the first "good Samaritan" to show up and offer to help her out. Yep, he got it, and tore down the garage for her. What a guy. Pitiful.

I'd say his buddy was there as a witness or backup, or both if needed. Sounds like the smirk was 'cause he expected you to rearrange the guy's face, which would have given them the magic bullet to get all your stuff. Good way to keep your cool.
