Need info QUICK! How to get a title for a car that is missing one in NJ or NY

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by RacerRick, Oct 1, 2007.

  1. I am looking at a car that is way under market value because of a poor online ad on that auction site, but it doesn't have a title. I need one to get the car over the boarder. The car is in NJ and I would get a bill of sale with it.

Would I be able to get one? I have friends in NY that can store the car and sell it to me after they get the title for it.

Need info quick because the auction is over soon.

What vintage? If it's pre-'73, it's a lot easier than if it's '73 or newer.

Older NY cars have transferable registrations, not titles.

  4. The car is actually coming from new Jersey, if that matters. I have friends who can store the car for me and if they can, get a NY registration for it so I can bring it over the boarder.

  5. Call Charles Walcutt w/ TITLES. He might be able to help. (410)488-5500. He has helped me with titles for my ground up Hotrods.

In NY, you can do a pencil rub of the VIN number, and bring that in to the DMV with the proper paper's all filled out.
They will issue a NON transferable registration for the car.
Once the VIN has been cleared ( no hit's in thier computer for being stolen) which more than likely it will be clear being a NJ car, a transferable registration will be mailed out. Then it can be signed over to you.

When i registered my first 32, i didn't have a registration, only the vin#. I did exactly what i just said, and within 3 month's i had a legit transferable registration for the car.

Once in a while, the car may have to be brought to the NYS Trouper's to verify the VIN number submitted is in fact the original one for the car. They will search the car for the hidden VIN #'s to verify.. I have yet to know anyone who had to do that myself....

    But it does happen.

Tony from rochester is right on target. I got a transferable reg. for my '41 using a rubbing of the VIN & proper paperwork available at the local DMV office.
