Im planning on a cross country trip for the summer of 08. Im planning on a loop around the country, totaling many miles. Any one ever done this? Any great stops? I have tons of ideas, alot of which i researched but i need more feedback. Shoot me some great ideas that arnt worth missing!, and those that are worth missing. Thanks Guys! steve
So Cal car museums like the Petersen. Visit them at a time that there's a particular car show you don't want to miss.
Sounds like a great trip,I always thought that would be fun.If your not in a hurry stay off the interstate you'll see a lot more of the country.
I did this two years ago. Took me a month. I'll be doing it again when I get back to the States at the end of this month. I recommend the Southwest. I drove US Route 50 "The Loneliest Highway in America" from Sacramento, around Lake Tahoe through Nevada and into Utah, drove through the Monument Valley, stopped in Moab, Utah and Roswell NM, saw Carlsbad Caverns. Eventually I made a 10,000 mile loop around the country. Bring a camera and a journal. Meet people!
Look back at the Salt Cured Hamb tour Steve. Or for that matter, any of Hotrodladycrusr's summer posts. Our country has sooo much cool stuff to see. It is hiding everywhere! You will have a great time. If you end up back in Ohio stop by and say hi!
I did route 66 from Kingsman Arizona to Bartsow Ca. What a ****ty highway, there was creeks i had to drive through, sink holes bigger than my car, no services, lots of abandoned motor homes and vehicles with a family of skeletons still sitting behind the steering wheel. It wasnt at all like they said it would be in the movie "cars". Once again disney has disapointed me. If you go through Bartsow be sure to eat at Peggy Sues Diner. It's been there since 1954, they have the best breakfast i've ever had.
what do you want to see? that is the first place to start, the second is your time frame? ,car museums? factory tours? landmarks you know the goofy old tea pot gas stations or such ,companies? many aftermarket companies have tours,, wanna do breweries? old , new, figure out what you have interests in, other wise i think you will just end up driving around and wasting your trip, everyone is gonna give you a personal answer, it is up to you to determine what ,,, like old motorcycles? gotta go to maggie valley carolina then, also pinkerington ohio for the national cycle museum,. like old car racers? garlits museum, indy garage in indianapolis best bet for you is to list your likes and the info is easy enough to find then check out this site http://www.roadsideamerica.com/ http://www.legendsofamerica.com/LA-RoadsideAttractions.html http://www.hubcapcafe.com/resources/cl***ic_car_museums.htm
Anything in any state, any highway or county road, any two lane is worth seeing...if nothing more than cruising along at 60 per...don't get in a hurry or you'll miss seeing what's left of Americana... R-
I did M***achusetts to Colorado about a year back. You can find a journal of the trip with a few billion pictures somewhere over at www.grmotorsports.com/board . Search for my username on there, gram, and road trip and it should come up. The highlights were a tour of my friend Andy's barns full of hot rod goodies, two Harley factories (York PA is a must-see), the Air Force Museum in Dayton OH and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, both must-sees, a few exotic car dealerships, a decent hot rod show, the amazing Kansas Motorcycle Museum, the Shelby America Collection in Boulder CO, and more. Spots I would have added if I had more time? The Auburn-Cord-Duesenburg museum, the Volo collection, the Darryl Starbird Museum outside Tulsa OK.
I would get a HUGE map of the USA and spread it out on a wall. Then do some research and make a list of all the car shows/happenings, with locations and date. Color code by month and put in pushpins for each on the map. Then start "connecting the dots". Definitely pick a few "must see" places- either geographically or automotive. B'ville Speedweek HAMB Drags RT 66 The Worlds Largest Ball of Twine Lonestar Roundup 100 Car Pileup Or. just get in your car and head west, when you get to the pacific, turn around and head east.
Great Feedback. Im taking 3 weeks to a month off from the begining of August. I wanna see alot of those " old coffee pot looking places" . Deffinitly old dirt track/ drag strips including measums. I already started maping out the journey on a giant map of america. Gonna see alot of landmarks and wonders such as the grand canon, gulf of mexico, etc. any more feedback would be apperciative. thanks steve
It really does depend on what you like. I always wanted to do an "early custom shop" tour to see what the Barris, Alexander brox., Valley Custom, etc. sites look like today. If you're in California, drive up Highway 1 through Big Sur after stopping at all the hot rod places already listed. Barber Motorsports complex in VA has an unbelievable museum for motorcycle enthusiasts. Drive through the west off the freeway to get a feel for how much open area there really is in this country. Stop at Bonneville to see the salt. Drive through moonshine country and envision '40 coupes running at night on those roads. Stop at wrecking yards in the middle of nowhere. Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon are spectacular. See all the dying small towns in the midwest before they're empty. Go to Deadwood SD and Mt. Rushmore. Meet everyone you can and have fun along the way.
