Southbound, and down (or, is there a GMB chapter in TN?)

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by RileyRacing, Oct 2, 2007.

  1. Well, it's official.

Back in March I had a thread up (under my pre-Alliance name of Sixgunner) about the Detroit area, and lack of employment therein. I did find a job, but it isn't what I want to do.

FFWD to August, when my Great Aunt passed away. I decided that life is too short to settle, and started applying for jobs that were more "me".

I was offered, and took, a job in Maryville, TN. Looks like I start at the beginning of November.

Thanks to Harrison for some insight to the area, and I look forward to meeting some more East Tennessee HAMBers in a month or so. I'd bring some old tin, but I bet you guys got it better than we do.;)
If anyone has any advice or tips on the area, please PM me.

Thanks, Ryan, for a garage that reaches so far out.

We'll be having a HAMB get together soon, more of a garage raiding party, for the stuff I don't wanna tote down... it'll go CHEAP!:D

What kind of a Michigan will we have with YOU gone??? :p :D

Where will we go to get drunk and see Man-Ass running around the pool or plastered to a neighbor's door-wall???

WHO will help the drunk chicks to puke OVER the fence?

What will the lump of Mystery Green Goo do if you aren't there to step in it?

When is this par-TAY you speak of????

    :D

  8. Soon, brotha, real soon. ;)

We're going down apt. hunting this weekend, then perhaps next weekend for the party...

Thanks for the kind words all. 62 wagon, you HAVE known me forever!

I hear the state is considering raising the income tax because when I leave there's gonna be a big void in the liquor tax collections...

Welcome to Mayberry! It's a great place to live.Every Friday night there's a group that gathers in the Sears parking lot at Foothills mall. There are a few HAMB guys that usually show up.I think there is a show/race at Knoxville Dragway this weekend as well, maybe Ratster or Harrison knows for sure.Where are you going to work at?

  11. I'll be at Standard Aero, in Repair and Overhaul.

When I was at my interview, the show was brought to my attention... sounds like a good one!

Wer'e gona miss you Jay, I hope it works out for you and the family. It's got to be better than here.

  13. Welcome Jay!

That nostalgia drag race is this Saturday at the Knoxville Dragway. Watch out for traffic around Knoxville. TN plays GA Saturday & half of both states will be in town for the game.

Bring all that crap you don't want.... & the drunk chicks. We could always use more of both.

The Friday "cruise" night in Maryville is always good. You should also put the Moonshine Run is Dawsonville, GA on your list.

having just done a cross country move.. moving a garage and car related stuff sucks. take a look at what you really want to keep and sell off the rest to your buddies, it will suck but so much easier when going that distance..

Best of luck.. TN is a great area..

When I left home, Fort Wayne, Indiana. I moved to K-town. I lived out west and then finally settled in a home in Powell, a 3 stop light surburb north of Knoxville on I-75. Living in Maryville you will be close to Bobby Alloway's shop along with Johnnie Cate Hot Rod and Custom. I live outside Nashville now but I would love to move back to Knoxville someday. There used to be a cruise in on Saturdays on Clinton HWY(north side) and one at Fountain City area McDonald's(Northside). There is a old car salvage yard out off Exit 417 off I-40 most of the cars are 60-70's. Yard is called Romines. PM me sometime when you get settled. I sneak back that way much as I can. Welcome to TN.

  16. Thanks again for all the kind words, and the info I've gotten from this board.

When we get settled, I'll have to have everyone over, as thanks.

    This place is great. ;)

since you're from Michigan, there is one thing we should tell you...do NOT call it MARYville...you may say Mareville..or Maarville..any other pronunciation is unacceptable, and will identify you as a Yankee...just so you know..

This is such a double edged sword for me. I blame our shitty economy for this.

I first met Jay in 1978-1979 at "Safety-Town"; a summertime program for pre-schoolers that basically had us in pedal cars learning the rules of the road. If nothing else, it gave our mothers a chance to breathe for a couple days while their kids were being entertained.

When we were in 4th-5th grade, Jay was the rambunctious troublemaker in Catechism class: one night a week at church where they shoved all that stuff down our throats.

When I got to high school, he and I were in auto shop together, and when we realized who we were to one another, we became close friends. We had inadvertently grown up together. Then, basically from 10th grade on, we were like brothers. Car wrecks, failed dates, abandoned project cars, Mt. Morris; We hung out together so much that his parents started calling me "their good son"...and to this year we still exchange Christmas cards to that effect, kind of as a joke, but kind of serious...

He is also close with my parents, they ask about him often. There is no other single person in my life that I would consider to be as close to my family as Jay...he is the brother I never had. Heck, we were only born 4 days apart back in '75 (I'm the older one :D ) He will be the best man in my wedding (if that ever happens...)

For a short time in the early part of this decade, we were even roommates in a house I was renting. He worked days, I worked nights. It was meant to be. (He also had the garage ;) ) Times were good. Jay- Remember Office Space? Remember date girl on the couch while I was talking to the neighbor girl on the porch? Good times!

FWD to 2007. Jay is married with 2 kids now, and lives about 1/2 hour away from me. I don't see him too often, but it's like we are still back in High School when we do get together. We keep in touch.

I understand the need for you to go, Jay...I would if I was in your shoes. No hard (selfish) feelings from me. In the long run, I think you are making the right decision to go, if not only for the money, but for your young family. You are trying to provide for them something Michigan can't offer- stability, and potential job security. And...always remember- don't make any "what ifs" for yourself.

    I'll miss ya, bud.

    P.S. So will DiDi...LOL...

  20. Oh, you mean the girl that when Vanessa and I said we were "going to bed" said "oh ok", and followed us into the bedroom? ;)

Since you know me, and know how I'm feeling, I'm gonna leave it at...

"PC load letter. What the FUCK does THAT mean?"

    :)

DEFINITELY true having lived this experience in 95. Now I speak the language West Knoxville is pronounced "WestKnoxvul" all one word. The town I live in now Murfreesboro is "Murfsboro". But it is all good. I Love it.

  22. Like, I gotta stop saying "duhtroit" and say it "DEE-troit"? ;)

I'll get the hang of it, I think...
