Does anyone know how i can hook up a stock 53 chev fuel gauge with a 0-90 ohm sender?

Trying to get it to work so I don't run out of fuel on the way to the "PILE-UP"

All I can tell you is that the sender has to match the guage. Is your guage a six volt guage and your sender 12 volts? I ended up having to buy a gauge to match the sender on my 50 and mounting it under the dash.

info. needed...1. are you 12 volt or 6? 2. why cant you use the stock sending unit? or buy a new stock sending unit?

if you are now 12 volt you need to run a resistor for the old 6 volt guage or you'll smoke it sooner than later!

I'm using a aftermarket fuel tank that came with a 0-90 ohm sender. The car has been converted to 12 volts and yes i have a resister to step it down for the gauge but the stock gauge uses a 0-30 ohm sender. Just trying to keep the sender matched to the tank.

I believe the National Chevy Association sells a sender with the correct range. (I'm pretty sure my gas gauge is 0-30 ohm, but it's not original so I couldn't swear to it.)

Is there a way to meter an existing sender, to find out what it gives?

I drove my '48 Chevy pickup without a working gas guage for 5 years, only ran out of gas once (in SLC on the way to Bonneville).

If you can't find the proper sender, do what I did...figure out how many miles you can drive in town before you run out. Once you know that limit, make sure you refuel before you hit it. If you use the in-town range you should never run out on the highway.

I just carry a 2gal can of gas at all times. Our Olds sender moves around about 25% of the dial, so you get a vague notion for how you're doing on gas...

On the roadsters we have no gauges. We use a grease pencil and mark the mileage and fuel added on the top left of the windshield when we fuel up. We know the cars get about 15MPG and so when we've gone 150-175 miles its time for a fuel stop. We found out the mileage the hard way a few times.
If your odometer doesn't work neither will this system.

  14. Try this link. It is the first item at the top of the page.

I started to do this, and even made up a box with the resistor, but ended up changing the gauge out before trying it.
