Im heading up that way next week to look at some property in the Raymond area, and am just trying to get a feel for the area in general.
What do you have to say good about the areas, bad about it etc..

how is the Job market ?

what is the weather like? season changes hot cold ?

I also would like to run up to either yosemite or maybe base lake for a day while out there. the wife wants to see a little season color change. any recomendations?

thanks in advance for any input.

B*** Lake is beautiful the weather in Fresno right now is 80 day 50 night but changing. Yosemite is awesome right now and also would be Sequoia National Forest where the Redwoods are. Job market like anywhere else.

Depending on your line of work,,, Fresno job market pretty much ****s.
Houses are pretty cheap, by California standards,,,
The weather will kill you 2-3 months out of the year.
    no real traffic,,

When I moved here, Everyone tried to convince me that it was great. The biggest selling point they had was that fresno is close to somewhere else.. Only a few hours to LA, a few hours to SF, not far from yosemite....
My problem with that argument was if the selling point is that it is close to somewhere else,,, why not just live somewhere else...

Ok so to make this a good trip for the wife! will there be more fall colors to see in sequoia or going thru B*** lake?
I will be stoping in Raymond first to look at a ranch and then either b*** lake or sequoia. the plan is to find a place to park the RV.

Went to Fresno early last year I guess it was and I thought it ****ed. I don't know anything about the job market but it just had no character and a lot of it was just dirty and ****py.

Not to mention coming from the southeast I expected to see all these rods running around everywhere from the way a lot of west-coasters talk and I didn't see ****.

My family is from the Fresno area. During the summer you can have weeks where the temperature is 105 degrees with no wind. I remember it being 85 degrees at 2am. In winter it can be 40 degrees for weeks with fog down on the deck. I hear that unemployment is at 10% in the Fresno area. The Downtown is very dead and there are homeless people everywhere. If you do have to live there I understand that Clovis is ok, but that area is mostly farmers and workers. Good luck.

Fresno's not that bad. Well, okay the weather can be a little warm during the summer. But it doesn't usually get over 105. Okay, sometimes we do have a small heat wave. But it hardly ever gets over 110. Or 112. Besides, it's a dry heat. And it only usually last for less than a month. Granted, the air quality can be a little bad at times, but we're working on clearing that up by crushing all those old smog spewing cars.

Winters aren't to bad. Except when it gets below freezing. But that's only for a week or two. And it doesn't usually freeze the water pipes. We do have some fog. But it's only for two or three months. And visibility is at least 30 or 40 feet. But that's only for a month or so.

The job market isn't bad so long as you like farm work and you're an illegal. And none of them have car insurance so they can save money that way when it rains and they get to stay home for a few days. But at least the get a little vacation. And they're really conscientious about saving gas by not stopping at stop signs.

The down town area isn't really as bad as people make it out to be. Except for the homeless. And panhandlers. And it's a really pretty city. Except for all the empty buildings. And over grown medians. And the graffiti. And the trash. But hey, we're working on it. Everyday i see crews of people working off their community service by cleaning up the medians, graffiti and trash.

    Welcome to Fresno.

ok so would you consider Raymond a part of Fresno or on the out skirts?
small town that I know. do you see the area picking up and possibly begin to boom in a few years?

Ok, I'm the one person that likes Fresno.

Weather: It gets pretty hot in the summer but I work outside everyday and it's not that bad, and it's really only like two months maybe. I lived in Pheonix for a while, that was hot. In the winter it only gets below freezing a few times a year. The fog is pretty bad but you get used to it. Everyone says the air quality is bad but I don't really notice it. Except a couple weeks ago when they had those fires up north, it got a little hazy.

I've got a job so I don't know anything about looking for one.

Downtown? Who cares? There's no reason to go down there anyway. Just stay in North Fresno. I hate one way streets anyway.

The close to everything agument is a good one. You'll be like a four max drive to any car show in California. And the beach and mountains are close. Toby, if you lived somewhere else then you wouldn't be close to the other things

    Houses are really cheap.

Raymond is actually in the foot hills of Madera county, which borders Fresno county. Both counties are pretty much the same weather and economically wise.

Look at a map of central Cal, find Hwy 99 and follow it north to Madera. Raymond is above Madera.

I don't see any "boom" in the future. Most of the Central Valley depends heavily on agriculture.

ok so consensus is Fresno is not a place to have a party life! how about retirement would you say its quite slow and small town community?
and then to my BIG question to keep the wife happy. next week b*** lake or yosimite for fall color change? she likes the fall season and wants to see a few trees turning color.

thanks for all the input keep it coming. in kicking around a few ideas for this property.

Hey on a busy day I heard you can watch g****s turn into raisens. I used to deliver bumpers to fresno area. I remember there were blocks of houses boarded up. kinda by the airport. That was wierd driving thru those hoods.

Yosemite will be nice for a few more weeks. I dont think its been cold enough yet to turn the colors. At least not here in modesto and we are like 2 hours away.

Raymond is in East Madera county, brown in color this time of year, the tree of choice is the oak. B*** Lake is northeast of Raymond and is green and pretty damn nice right now, Oakhurst is right there also, these would be my choices of retirement, North Fork over Raymond in my eyes. Yosemite is great short drive from B*** Lake, Oakhurst, and not so bad from Raymond. I would hit both B*** and Yosemite they are to close to each other to just visit one. You will fall for the area up there Quiet peaceful and weather is pretty well rounded.

First time up I think I would camp at yosemite and day trip B*** Lake. Than if ya had the time I would spend the last two days of the trip at Sequoia and day trip Kings National Forest, that would make this trip one awesome relaxed time.

ok so i'm replying to an old *** thread but I have to back up FRESNO on this one.

I love fresno! and the valley. i wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
it's the 6th largest city in California, but not the big city lifestyle...

beautiful springs and fall time. gets a little hot for about 2 months/year but that when the weekend get aways come into effect. foggy days are awesome.

and as for cars...Fresno has has a lot shops. Baskins, Wheel vintiques, Coker Tire, Rallye America, a **** load of chrome and powdercoating shops, one of the biggest wrecking yards in the state (Turners) and not to mention all the cool old junk you see when you take a drive through the country side a long the farms and dairys.

and we're the new home to the NATIONAL CHAMPS! go dogs!

What type of engineering work do you do. I know I have billets for engineers here right now in Lemoore, and the valley isnt as bad as some make it out to be. Lived in 8 different states and be to more countries than I can remember. Rather live here than LA or San Deigo, or the bay area.

Every city in the US has its pro's and con's. All those polls on whats the best city, this and that is ********. City's are made by the people that live there. Some good, and some bad. Its every where you go. So unless your from a one horse town, its like any other city in the US. Might not have a veiw of the ocean, but hey theres mountains. May not always be able to see them, but hey its California, not Colorado.
