Do you absolutly have to use a front motor mount on y-blocks or can you get away with just the side mounts? What kind of problems (if any) can I expect if I don't use one?
While I don't have 100,000 miles experience with no front mount, I ran without one for years in my '51 Ford. I can't imagine what harm can come your way. It ends up being just like a Chevy.
Some were mounted with the side mounts from Ford, originally. So long as the bosses are drilled, go for it....
Side mounts only are fine. As mentioned, on some vehicle the side mounts were used (most passenger cars). T-birds and trucks used the front mount and a different bell housing or steady rest.
side mounts are fine, early 60s galaxies only had side mounts when they had Y blocks, as well as 57-59 fords and edsels if they had Y blocks
In the 54-56 CARS is was a "steady rest", not really a motor mount. The mounts were on the side. This is different on the trucks and TBirds - it was the front motor mount. Ford dropped them in 57 (i think) determining that they were not needed. Most owners of 54-56's don't use them - I did when I put the 312 in only because they came that way
Thank you all for your input. I only orderd side mounts and can't get the front in time for the california hot rod reunion (7 days and counting).
