It's just so amazing that the chassis' they were running back then were so simple and yet they have blown hemi's and car's in the low to mid 9's. Those were the true pioneer's of the sport. The 32 5w in the first few pics looks to have a lengthened frame if I can see it right or maybe the body moved back, kinda hard to tell from the angle of the shot. These really make me wish I grew up in a different era-Drew

"Well there is a difference between looking low and looking broken..... Thats why everyones so salty..."

those cars are laying on the ground, like the spring-over snapped! looks broken and low, but it obviously worked for them.

Cool haven't heard international speedway in a long time.I used to love going there with my pop.We would either hit up international or head out to porter to see the races. The last time I was at international was umm let's see if I can remember correctly in think it had to be around 86 or 87.Went with an older guy from the nieghborhood who was giving his 70 camaro a few spins down the track.I still remember this older cat named Bobby had a 65 malibu and when he ran it the first time the dude must have panicked and came back up the track  the wrong way.Needless to say they never let him drive there again.

Yeah I used to love going there, unfortunately they have a wal mart and a neighborhood there now. This area is ever expanding and tearing down all the places we had to play when we where younger.

VERY COOL content....but, what's up with the picture quality? Were those taken with a box camera made in grade school? I've seen better quality pictures of Abe Lincoln.

(Pleeeaaase understand that I'm just being sarcastic)

Cant help but to add in on the Texas Gassers. Ill also introduce myself, I logged on a while back & Im addicted to hotrods Im in Ausitn Texas.

Here some good Ol Austin Texas stuff Id like to share with you guys!

I did recignize 2 of them being from Austin better known as the "Austin Racers" not realy a club just a name giving to them. Back in those days in central Texas there was a few flagmen style dragstrips with some great hotrod clubs and not just in California.

You can read more about them on this link I found searching for some info. on old Texas gassers & hotrod clubs.

    1. 56 Chevy "The Little White Racer" Owned by August "Hands" Hartkropf of Austin Texas. It may be the 56 in those previous posted photos.

    2. 32 Roadster number 444 owner by Buck and Bohls of Austin Texas.

I know the nephew of Roger Bohls who filled me in on the 32 roadster number 444 retired record holder also featured in hot rod magazine in the late 50's. He had some great stories to share about the trips they made to Houston.

Some friends created www.texasironwerksshowdown.com to post some insite on who these Austin hotrodders were. If anybody gets a chance come by and check us out.

    HANDS

Nice pics of the old dragstrip. Did not see any photos of "HANDS".

I think the man's name was August. He might have been from

Austin. His '56 Chev, very small block, was the first engine that I

ever heard scream. Also, the first man that I ever saw with a

ponytail. He was in the infield at Meyer Speedway for THE LIBERTY

    BELL 300, July 4, 1964.

August "Hands" Hartkropf is a hotrod legend here in Austin Tx. There was also a 55 green chevy Panel August and his brother Butch Lake raced in the 60's & sat for a longtime next to my house until the late 90's. I havent found the article but in the 60's August was also featured in the 1960's magazine Strength & Health magazine- featured a story on grip strength written by Dr. Terry Todds-famous strong man power lifter. After a childhood accident August developed related like "Andre the Giant" syndrome causing his body to over develop.

    A hotrodding gentle giant!

This is a flyer of August taking out NHRA national champion E.T. & reocrd holder Fred Napfel famous 55 chevy Stormin Bull.
