I can't resist. Why? 499 is a very odd, yet precise target?

Has to be under 500 cubes for a salt class.

Well, a 454 with a .060 overbore (that makes 4.310) and a 1/4 inch stroker crank (that makes 4.250) is a 496, a common stroker combo. That's damn close and uses readily available parts.

You might look at what NHRA Pro Stockers run. They're limited to 500 cu. in. I looked at an old Richie Stevens engine that ran a 3.50 stroke crank and around 4.75 (off the top of my head) bore. You gotta go with ALL custom parts to do it.

If you want to run a "standard" block, how about 4.600 bore and 3.75 (396/427) stroke crank. I believe that would give you your 499" with a short stroke engine.

Ditto on the 496..........common off the shelf parts..........use most any 454 block............and with a custom overbore, a 499 is possible.

btw...have a 496 short block on the stand for sale now....$2800

    Thanks guys.

Has anyone built a motor like Larry is suggesting???

Hmm 496 sounds like the way to go, sorry for a daft question about an obvious combo. Tex pls PM me details of what you have.

Chevy bow tie short deck block, bored to 4.600 (not uncommon), 427 crank at 3.76 stock stroke equals 499.90 cubic inches. If that makes you nervous, offset grind the crank to destroke it a bit (easy to go + or - a couple of cubes). Parts are available new at your local dealer. GMPP's over the counter CNC stuff is very nice. So is Dart's block as is the piece from Mitchell (Merlin). Blocks aren't cheap, but racing is never cheap. It'll outrun the 496.

Lot's of people have outrun little men with big engines, with a smaller engine. Bigger is NOT always better Peter, just usually more expensive.

If you're dead set on all that extra weight, then I'd buy that 496 that was offered up.

Hey Pete , the big block I had in my rod over 30 years ago was a 454 , Mark 4 4bolt block overbored 4.570 , 427 crank , 490 something cubes , 600 hp , no worries to light the slicks in top gear , all the power in the world with one of these , and this was in a daily street driven rod on the streets of NSW , but as others have said ....cubes are just one of the factors............if ya gunna go serious cubes you need to talk to some serious people....good engine builders....................cheers
