Ok, so I am in the process of rewiring my 55 bel air and I'm at the point of doing the turn signals. I have been screwing around trying to get that one bolt on the back of the steering wheel which holds the horn button in. It has a shape like the batman symbol. Does anyone know what tool I need to remove this? My screwdriver has gotten me so far, and I am afraid if I continue I will strip it past the point of no return. As always, your help is appreciated.

You need a set of 4 Chevrolet screwdrivers, AKA cheese head, clutch head, butterfly, & dozens of other names not suitable for print.

Is this something I can purchase at Napa or any local store? I'm glad you replied as I have been dicking around in the garage trying to think of any way to get this out since I last posted. I was at the point where I was going to wake up early and drill it out first thing in the morning although if I can just purchase the right tool, that would obviously make things a lot easier. In the 55 factory repair manual, it doesn't even state that they are an odd tool. I guess it was something that chevrolet techs just knew back in good ole 55. Thanks

I have gotten lucky sometimes with just the right width flat screwdriver. Also, take a steel rod or another screwdriver and hit that screw a few hard times to knock it loose before you go any further. Or maybe grind down a old screwdriver if you can't find the right cheese head one. I have been right where you are before!:D
Sometimes you can knock the hell out of it the right way and it will come out easy.

Buy a cheap set of the interchangable ends that you can get for magnetic screw drivers.

That way you will end up with a load of clutch headed tips and other stuff that you will one day need as you continue on your build.

Guess I just lucked out, the Napa up the street has all 4 of them. I looked for the interchangeable heads at Sears and Home Depot, it seems the clutch heads were not in any sets. Oh well. Thanks for the help!

On a followup, the 4 clutch head screwdrivers I bought from Napa didn't fit. I guess I stripped the bolt too much from using a screwdriver. I tried everything else I could think of, needlenose, small visegrips, other screwdrivers, so far nothing. Right now I am taking a break to get rid of my frustration. Guess I'll just have to drill it out and retap it to a larger thread.

  10. Before you drill it out, try to slot the head for a striaght blade.
A little PB blaster for luck

Not a bad idea, by the way, what's PB blaster?

  12. PB Blaster is a penetration cocockson, that is the best stuff that I have found for contrary stuck bolts, just might make your job a litle easier

Your local Snap-On dealer should have a set on his truck.

If you have the room, weld a nut to the screw head. When you get it out, match it up with a corresponding thread of a regular screw or phillips head.

At times PB Blast is the sweet sweet nectar of life. I should buy it in 55 gallon drums!
