I'm a newby to Chevys and since I bought a '65 BelAir as an anniversary gift for my wife, now I have to get more familiar with them. I'm tracking down all the little monsters that go bump under the hood, and came up with some questions about the carb.

The engine is from a '69 Chevelle (350) and the carb is a Rochester 2GV. The Chilton manual says it a '74 according to the numbers on the side. I'm pretty sure everything is mostly stock.

I apologize if my questions seem elementry, but I have to start somewhere.

First, there is a hardline coming out the back of the carb that someone has cut and pinched off. Should this concern me? If so, where should this line lead to? Also, what is the little electrical plunger device on the side for?

Two vacuum lines coming out under the bowl. Both are plugged. Should these lead somewhere important?

What the heck is this? (round device, center of picutre)

    Here's the beast in question.

Again, I apologize if the questions seem stupid.

  2. the cut and pinched off line out of the back of the carb i believe is a vacumm line for power brakes. the "round" thing is and EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve. the other two vacumm lines must be for some pollution stuff

    how does it run?

#1 I believe was for the PCV to intake line.
#2 is the "Fast idle solenoid" to raise the idle when you turn on the AC
or "Anti-diesel solenoid" which is energized when ign is on and de-energized when ign is shut off. In that configuration it allows the throttle plate to close completely so the engine won't run on.
#3 I'm not sure about these.
#4 is the EGR (exhaust gas recirculator valve) which pumps exhaust into the intake under some conditions.
The line in the intake between the dist and carb, with the bolt in the hose, is for the power brakes.
You should plug the extra tube next to the dist vacuum on the right rear of the carb (where you are missing a bolt).

Check your local library for a vacuum diagram for the engine.

There are no stupid questions for what you don't know!

It actually runs OK. When it's first started up, it keeps wasting to stall but I imagine that the choke needs adjusting (still trying to figure that one out). Once it's warm, it runs and starts fine. Especially considering there is one vacuum line that isn't plugged and two mounting bolts missing  .

Actually, the two missing bolts are how it came from the factory. They must have decided that saving .01 by leaving out two of the carb bolts was a financially profound move.

The two missing bolts are indeed a factory thing. The intake manifold is a later model than 1969, probably a 1974 since it has EGR. You might double check the numbers on the block to make sure what engine you have? or it could be someone just swapped a newer "top end" onto a 69 engine (if that's what the block turns out to be)

you might want to plug that T that goes to the distributor.
