I have a 30 gal craftsmen air compressor that I have had for about a year. I bought it used and have only replaced the motor on it. The question I have is after it recharges 3 or more times within 10 minutes it starts to smoke and sputter hot oil out of the small hole between the two intakes on the head. Is it overheating and if so what could be causing it. It also leaks a lot of air out of the two air intakes once it is warmed up, but doesn't leak at all when it is cold. Is it time to rebuild the compressor?
Sounds like it is ****ed........I have an upright version and always regarded it as a throw away unit. When it quits me, likewise.
Sounds to me like you have a bad head gasket. A few years ago I bought a whole gasket set for an air compressor pump for around $10. Who know how much it would cost these days, but back then you had to buy the full set, they wouldn't sell just the head gasket. Gene
It shouldn't leak air out of the intakes at all. It sounds like, a**** other things, you have a check valve sticking/leaking. The check valve should be where the tube from the compressor connects at the tank. I made the mistake (twice) of buying (2) pieces of cheap Chinese **** compressors ($89) from Kragen and both of them had faulty check valves within a few hours of use.
I took the head off and sure enough the head gasket was broken in like 10 pieces and that is where the air can get into the crankcase vent. Any one know where I can get a gasket set? Thanks for the help, 4-banger
Sears sells parts. Or, you can try electric motor repair shops, if they don't have them they can tell you who does. Just the same, I don't see how the head gasket would prevent air leaking from the tank to the cylinder(s), that's a check valve.
You can order replacement parts at www.craftsman.com. At the bottom of their home page there is a field labeled: parts and accessories. Give 'em a try. CHEERZZZZZ!!!!!! ZIMM
It wont stop that, but it is loosing most of the air through the crankcase vent which is sealed by the gasket.
