So I replaced the old tank on my 50 Ford Sedan with a new one. Hooked up a temporary rubber fuel line to try to get it going...now for some reason the fuel pump doesn't seem to be working properly. At first I would ***ume that maybe the fuel pump is just bad, but it is a practically brand new one. I even pulled it apart and everything looks ok in it as far as I can tell. It does seem to "blow" a bit more than "****" (sorry in advance for that one, lol)but I don't think that is the problem. I have checked the lines and fuel will flow fine through them, but it is just not getting pumped into the filter bowl. Any suggestions?
I will ***ume your talking about a mechanical flathead pump here. Three things will cause lack of fuel going into the bowl. An air leak in the fuel line, a seal leak in the pump or an incorrect fuel pump push rod.
Thats correct....original flathead v8. The push rod has not been changed to my knowledge and it has worked in the past before i changed the tank. I have checked for air leaks on the filter bowl. perhaps i need to check a bit more closely. any other suggestions?
Was the pump installed correctly under the cam lobe? I've seen them installed above the cam lobe and not work. I'm not a flathead guru so I don't know if that even could be the problem. Also, how about fuel filter...is it clogged? Check the fittings all along the fuel line. Spray the fittings with soapy water.
Did you check the one way valves in the pump to see if they were gummed up or stuck? Did the bowl go dry when you had the tank out? Flatman
was the pump working before you changed to a new one. i would suspect the cam lobe the runs the pump may be worn.
Yeah...i opened up the pump and checked the little one way valves and they were both in good shape. the pump is pretty much brand new. what exactly do you mean by cam lobe? right now there is a push rod that comes up and the arm of the pump has a little bell looking part that sits on top of the push rod. everything looks like it is hooked up correctly from what i can tell. the push rod does move up and down ok.
