Met two people that said they had a clock delete, with a gold Mercury head. I've never heard of one. They say its a rare factory option or dealer installed. Anyone have one or a picture, any info. I want one!!!.....OLDBEET
a clock delete wouldn't be dealer installed. that would mean they would have to remove the clock at the dealer. I don't think a customer would come in to buy a new merc and have them remove the clock to save a buck-fifty. gotta figure no clock on a merc would be pretty rare, it would have been built that way from the factory....
....unless of course the clocks were dealer installed. that would mean that somewhere in the back room of an old Mercury dealer there is a box full of clock deletes. I got 70 49-50 chevy radio delete plates a few years ago. since the radios were all dealer installed, and they put the deletes in a box and never threw them away.
Thought it was funny, bein around Mercs for 50 years that I've never seen one! Maybe someone took the head from a 51 hubcap and put there.
Old Beet-- The Rodder's Journal story about Mercury Charlie's '51, "Nadine", in TRJ # 36 mentions (page 72) that his build/judge book for the car includes "a Mercury-head disc that was an original '49 Mercury clock-delete filler". When I read that I thought it was kind of weird because I thought that all Mercs came with the clock by default-- guess not! Why don't you ask Mercury Charlie about it? I'd like to see it too. I just got a good clock for my '49 the other day; now if I could just find the stainless trim piece for the glovebox door!
sounds like you need a parts book for the era, that would tell you if such a thing really existed or not.
Old Beet - Okay, I went and checked my Mercury Ch***is Parts Catalogue from July, 1949 and Body Parts Catalogue from October, 1949 and they do not mention any clock delete plate. The radio delete plate is listed ("Plate - radio opening cover") in the Body Parts manual and the clock ***embly is listed in the Ch***is Parts manual but there is no mention that I could find in either book of the clock delete plate. I looked under every way that I could think of that it might be listed. It wasn't listed under the Accessories section of the books either. So the mystery continues...!
The gal I met at the swap meet, said she bought hers NOS in the factory box. Thought it was dealer offered. Said it was a straight on view of the Mercury Man, similar but not the same as in the steering wheel. Was raised and gold in color, fit perfect in the clock?? Sent a P M to Mercury Charlie, maybe he will give us a pic, I hope...........OLDBEET
This is from "Tokyo's" site.He told me it was Canadian. http://public.fotki.com/Acten/mercury_pictures-1/tokyos_album/2.html This pic is upside down. http://public.fotki.com/Acten/mercury_pictures-1/tokyos_album/25.html
here is a page from canada coould be they came from a meteor http://media.ford.com/newsroom/release_display.cfm?release=18767 amounted to only 2716. Production ended early for the radically different Ford introduced in June 1948. There was no 1949 Mercury 114. However, a similar model succeeded it. All Ford products shed their old prewar styling for a postwar new look. Of course, Ford of Canada's unique models also embraced the new styling. A June 25, 1948 press release stated: "The Mercury and Lincoln division of Ford Motor Company of Canada, Limited announced today that it would shortly introduce a brand new automobile in the low-priced field, to be known as the 'Meteor.' There was no 1949 Mercury 114. However, a similar model succeeded it. ..... If there was no clock installed, the Monarch logo appeared in that upper middle ...
old beet------This doesn't answer your question, but if you just want to remove the clock, this is how I did a 49 Merc. TwoChops left click to enlarge photo
Ive never seen one, and Ive seen a bunch of wierdo Merc stuff. I even have one of those stainless wierdo splash pan trim pieces. Only seen one of those ever. Have never seen a clock delete. OT tho, I think two chops dash looks awesome, that is beautiful. Still more OT...I did once buy a 49 Merc clock at a yard sale haha.
The 49 merc in Canada was called a Monarch, same car but some diferent trim. My 49 had one of these radio dellete pieces. So maybee just in Canada?
It is rumored that the reason for the clock deletes in the Monark is that after they came out in '49, a number of Canadians were stopped for speeding and when asked by the Mountie if they knew how fast they were going, a typical answer was "about a quarter to three". After that something had to be done.
2312 kilometers Beet ! Quarter to three is 1445...1 mile is 1,6 Kilometer...it's that simple...and this is kinda a historic moment...a Merc part YOU don't have ??
That's correct about the Mercury Man description. My neighbor bought a 49 Canadian dash and it had that same clock delete. Really cool.
