I've been a HAMB reader for some time, but never posted before. I get too much spam mail as is! HAMB gets a bad rap on other boards, totally unjustifited... usually.

Anyhow, I'm Steve and I live in Michigan and work for one of the 'big 3'. I've had muscle cars, sports cars, race cars, a Harley, a dunebuggy (still have), etc., but no rods. I've always loved rods, but never took the dive until this project. Four years ago I decided a family style drop top was needed, so I imported from Argentina a '35 Ford Convertible Sedan. Super nice body, but missing some really hard to find stuff. I've since managed to find the missing stuff, but have not started the project yet. Building a new house, and then a almost finished 40' x 60' pole barn this spring, came first.

For the '35 I plan stock sheetmetal (maybe lowered headlights), no doughnut on the back, front nerf bars, lowered with 17"/18" 5-spokes, and motivated by some type of supercharged Ford (flat or OHV, I haven't decided). Door handles and exposed hinges a must... and NO BILLET ****!

When the kids have moved out I can upgrade to a '32 3W...

I must'a missed seeing the last GMB (MGB) parade you guys were in on St.Patrick's Day... Anyway, I work in Dearborn, so you can guess which one of the 'big 3' (don't include Toyota).

As for the '35, should I leave it RHD? Just kidding. Last time I drove a RHD here I kept going over the center line!

The buggy is Corvair 140HP powered, and really skoots! My 7 yr old says it's faster than his 5hp go cart. [IMG]

Shouldn't get much spam mail from us. But you just might make a friend or two.
I'm only speaking for myself but don't really care about the bad rap justified or not. One of the few places in the world I can hang out and be myself. Then don't have to hang my head when I run onto the afore mentioned friend or two.
Said all that to say this, WELCOME to the best place in cyberspace to be a real rodder and share ideas and info.

Maybe hour and ten minutes, no big deal. That's what it takes to get a nice chunck of property for the barn! Those LA sun-tan types should relate to long commute times. My '01 Windstar has 95K and counting.

Nice car. Can you tell me more about the import process. I remember seeing a company in Argentina that specializes in exporting old cars, but I can't remember the name. Whas this process fairly painless? Who did you purchase from? Inquiring minds want to know.

The '35 was purchased from doctor father and son team named Kaplan, who did at one time advertise in Hemmings and on a website. Not sure if they are still in business, but last I saw they were pushing 'old car tours' in Argentina. They arranged for all the shipping to a US port. The shipping company contacted me to arrange rail shipping to Detroit. I had to get a import expediting commpany locally to clear the customs paper work. In all, it was about $3500 to get it here. Only pause was convincing the Customs agent that it was not a foreign car, but a repatraited US car (sent there as a knock down kit originally).

The BIG problem was getting these overseas sellers to give me real details about what I was actually getting. They would send me 4 or 5 generally fuzzy pictures and no description. I would send back (e-mail) 5 or 10 questions asking about specific parts, or the condition of stuff. They would answer maybe 1/2 the questions with only a 'yes' or 'no' type answer. It turns out that parts they said were included were either homemade copies (unusuable), too bad to use, or incomplete. The stuff I had to come up with in the end (top irons, door garnish, etc.) were unique to the convertible sedan and REALLY hard to find.

With today's ebay rip-offs when buying something sight unseen, I'd be reluctant to do it again. In the long run it did not save me that much when the shipping is figured in.
