Hi every one, i need some help and i cant find any info on a 55-57 Chevy gasser axle. I have looked at pretty much all the post on here about gasser stuff, but im looking for the measurements of an axle for this car. if any one of you wich is many have a 55-57 Chevy gasser and can give me the measurements i would appreciate it . i need the Kingpin to kingpin and the center to center of the spring perches. Thanx guys!!
I do not have those measurements on hand .. as my car is in storage for now .. but a 49 to 54 chevy pick, works out great .. springs and all, to change the pick up 6 bolt hubs to 5 bolt use a 49 to 54 car hub .. the width of the axle is only about 1/2 inch different than the car .. this set up is cheap and strong .. you can laso use the 56 steering box . If ya wanna make it look cool, dill holes in the axle before mounting .. ohh you can also make disc brakes for it,, if you need em .. easy to do .. ALL i did was take brake drums off, slide on 69 camaro or nova rotors, get some caliper brackets from the roundy round book, cheap,, and at this point you decide if you want to go with big car calipers or the lighter metric ones ..{ I used metric } then mine needed a 3/4 inch spacer to go between the mounting backing plate to the caliper bracket .. done .. an easy way to figure out how much of a spacer you need, is to mount pads in the caliper and the bracket to the caliper, put it over the rotor, then shoot air into the caliper, and measure from bracket to the axle mounting point . Hope this helps .. it should unless you want the chrome tube axle ,, then I have no idea ,, but form others responce,, those round tubes from speedway or forget where, are way to narrow ............ He is right .I have a friend with a 56 Gasser and he has everthing listed above,including the drilled holes and disc brake conversion.Do yourself a favor and put in new kingpins and spring bushings while you have it apart.I dont care how tight the original kinpins feel .Its not worth it for $35.00 .Good luck with your swap...
Very good answer. I will use this in the future. I remember the cars when I was growing up were like this. I rarely ever saw tube axles.
I agree ,when i mocked up the one i ordered from MAS in my Ranchero,i thought i messed up cause it was about 1 1/2 inches wider the stock suspension was.I didnt take into consideration that the 49 Chevy spindals were wider than the Falcons. When i got the wheels on it and set it on the ground it turned out to be perfect a bit wider than stock ,especially with the pizza cutter Crager wheels. When a car is setting way higher than stock in the front like mine is (almost a foot higher) ,it will make the factory wheel track look narrow ...
we buy made to order axles from mas, hard to deal with but , we order them 54 inches kingpin to kingpin for all 55 56 57 chevys... use ford or chevy spindles and speedway disc brake kits and speedways springs and hardware, much better than mas stuff...
