Anyone have an idea of what a running 348 and trans are worth? I know they were only made for a few years. Are they any good? Thanks, Bill
are you buying it or trying to sell it ? if you're buying it...it's only worth what you are willing to pay for it. it may be worth $1500.00 to one person, but only worth $300.00 to someone else. if you are selling it, it's only worth what someojne is willing to pay for it. to make it have a "worth" there has to be 2 people who want it bad....that will make one guy pay more than the other...then it becomes a bidding war between them. it's hard to put a value on things these days. like i said, it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. to me...if it is a good running, non knocking, non smoking all original 348 with a good working turboglide trans...i'd only give $500.00 for it...but that's just me...348's really don't do anything for me. it's all a matter of opinion on what something is really worth.
Wrong--if the Turboglide still works, sell it to a restorer that needs/wants it and recoup some of your investment on the engine. One of the advantages of a 348/409 is that lots of later, more worthy transmissions will bolt up to them.
Trouble is, the 348 only looks good in a 61 bubble-top. It looks like a wart in every other application...
Huh?.........a wart?? Those things have a look of their own and stand out from the pack. I'll take some of those 348-409 warts all day long.
My first car was a 58 chevy Belair with a 4V - 348 and a turboglide. I can't think of why a turboglide wouldn't be fine for a car that is simply driven. As for standing up to any abuse, mine lasted for 1/2 of the first saturday night of high school stop light racing. Dad was real please about that, but he did put a powerglide in it to replace the trashed turbo. I've always had a soft spot for W-motors, a tripower 348 with a 4 speed and decent gears will pull pretty darned hard and a dual quad 409 is an animal.
Come on now ... why wouldn't you want a 348 in a '58 Biscayne 2 door sedan or Sedan Delivery ? A '59 Biscayne or Bel Air 2 door sedan ? A '61 Impala 2 door sedan ?
Personally, I like high reving 283's in all those cars. I like the sound of open headers at 11k rpm... Wart:
The reason I asked is I have a 60 El Camino and I need a motor and thought it might be nice to put this in it seeing it came with no motor. The person selling the ad didn't put a price in it so I am waiting to see what he wants for it. Thanks for all the responses but the **** with the 1 thousand something post. There is always an ***hole in every bunch.
See. Ugly as hell..... What'll you take for it. The 348/409 looks great and a better deal would be the iron glide behind it. Heard lots of not so kind info about the turbo glide.... Remember though, this is about being yourself and being different if fun. Creates conversation. Why run with the crowd. If ya don't want the 348, let me know I'm here in the state. I could use a back up for the ole' '58.
I had never heard of Mohawk, MI so I just punched it up on Google Earth. Holy Cow!! Nobody can live up there can they?
Everybody wants something different, so the 348 is worth whatever, as the previous threads said. However, the Turboslide was such a useless POS that if it's a good one, someone w/pay dearly that WANTS one for a resto. There aren't that many around any more that are in good working order..........Ole Pork
I would think that if you could get a running engine and transmission for under a $1000.00, it'd be a good deal. They are pretty expensive to rebuild, but you can still get all of the stuff to do it. Larry T
Thanks again for all the help. We get lots of snow. Beautiful up here, only 3000 something residents in Keweenaw County.
I love the way they look. This one is a 409 but a 348 looks the same. I'm working on a set of HiPo 409 heads today, trying to finish a QB build that's been in the shop for a while. Gotta tri power 348 I'll put together for something of mine "someday". Larry T
