Hey guys, So, a new one on me... I was driving today and came to a quick stop, and the engine slowed considerably and then stalled. Really don't know what could cause this, I don't think it is vaprization as the lines are not close to the manifold and there is no hood. So they stay cool. Any Ideas? The engine is a 327 with 6x2 manifold and Strombergs. The outer 4 are blocked off. And it is hooked up to a T350 transimission. Another thing is it seems that when it is put into gear that the engine does a similar thing, the engine seems to be having a tough time rotating or the torque converter is too tight, is this possible? Thanks for you're help in advance - MRAK
Wow...not much to go on, but here's a few ideas to get you started... 1. Vacuum leak 2. Float setting (too high or too low) 3. Float(s) stuck 4. Bad ground between engine and body or frame 5. Timing off 6. Insufficient power to ignition (coil)
is this all happening after you stopped fast? i would look at the carbs first, sounds like they flooded with the angle and force of the hard stop.
It does sorta sound like a locked up converter too. If you start it in neutral, does it try to move any?
check ur oil level as well to make sure it isn't over filled and sloshin up on the couterweights during a quick stop
It is happening after the car comes to a stop. When the car is in neutral it idles fine, just when it is in gear it seems labored. I'll try starting it in neutral though and see. I have been suspecting the carbs too, will take a look there as well. <No it doesn't try to move when started in neutral> I will also go out again and see if there is anything else.
I just went through this very problem with another HAMBer and after checking carbies, convertor, plugs, plug wires, ballast resistor, etc., etc., no change, but then changed the dizzy and problem went completely away, but not before. You don't by chance have a Pertronix conversion in it do you?
You may need a mild stall converter. I had a small cam, a little bigger than stock. Had to go to a converter with 1800 stall.
