will i run into any problems running a 302/T5 package from an 87 mustang with my stock 52 rearend? i just want to be sure ill be ok. i tried searching but couldnt find any specifics
The only problem I see is if the T5 has the mustang shifter on it, it will be located directly under your seat.
yeah, you probably don't want to sit on that. Lots of tech on how to fix it, though, an S10 T5 shifter and tailhousing does the trick if I remember right.
My buddy's 56 has a Mustang T-5 behind it. The shifter is close but clears the stock seat nicely. I don't believe it was modified. His engine may be mounted farther forward than some. I did notice a lot of space between the valve cover and the firewall. His is a Windsor. Your original truck gears might be a little low to be able to use all 5 gears. His 9" rear has 3.50 gears in it and it takes off in second with no problem. 3.25 would be nicer. I'm betting your truck rear is closer to 3.70-3.90. First gear might be useless.
I ran a 302 for a while in my f-1 and didn't have any issues. Once I put a 393W in the truck I broke 2 of them in a matter of a month and upgraded.
Sorry I can't help you there. I used an automatic in my truck. I originally started to mock everything up with a 60's 3 speed and just use the stock 3 on the tree linkage but I am a little too tall (6'-8") to comfertably drive one of these trucks a lot of miles with a manual so I wussed out and went auto.
thanks for the help everyone. i checked out the TECH T5 thread loads of great info. i guess before i get bent outta shape im gonna drop the motor/****** in and see what issues i have. instead of running a bench seat, would a split bench maybe work? maybe leave enough room between the seats for the shifter OT-fordf1trucknut, any chance you could send me some pics of your truck inside and out? id appreciate it. thanks again everyone
Check into using a Jeep top cover. The shifter is in the cover and should put it just about where a stock floor shift would have been. Also, using car shifters in a truck like the F1 means you are either reaching down to the floor to shift or you extend the shifter and the distance between the gears is quite long. Haven't even discussed clutch linkage yet.
You could be right about that, it's been along time and I don't remember where I saw it. It was a write up about installing one in a 40 ford and they were dealing with the rear shifter issue. More I think about it, not a T5. Sorry... having a senior moment here.
