I spent my weekend grinding 100 pounds of bondo out of my 53. The quarters are thrashed but I think they can be fixed. We got the car stripped of anything it didn't need and started welding up all of the trim holes. I also started working on getting the fender skirts to fit right. So grinding, welding, cleaning an beating the hell out of the skirts.

We also pulled the rear and trans to replace the clutch. Turns out I didn't need a clutch, just a rear main seal. I'm still waiting on my parts to show up. Going to do the clutch the rear main and the oil pan.

    Here is where I started.

After a little bit of beating and banging. I'm thinking of extending the skirts. Anybody do this or have any sugestions?

There is a lot more work to do. I hope I can all the holes welded up and have it looking ok by Pistons and Paint on the 10th.

Great stuff. I had to do that to my '54 and had it turn out great. It's alot of work but well worth it in the end. Here is how I spent my weekend-

Good luck with the rear main seal. There are a couple of ways to use one piece lip seals on 216-235 'bolts. But they require machine work on the crank flange and/or block.

It was a great weekend to be working on the car in DFW! Great work!

I had the front end of the coupe all over the garage floor changing king pins and bushings in the spindles. I was hoping to drive over to the alignment shop to have them do a little bending on my I-beam axle to get the thing to drive straight, but the rain slowed that down. Pistons and Paint bound, and Temple Drags bound, too!

  6. That is where I was this weekend. I wish I had known that was you guys I saw you do the push start for cracklefest.

Yes they were... You have no idea how much Bondo was in this car. The p***enger side quarter was almost an inch thick. I found a little bit of cancer behind the wheel wells (big enought to put a fist through). It wasn't patched, just Bondoed over and painted. Who ever did the body work on this thing was an idiot. They didn't try to fix anything. Just slap some filler on it and go. I have a lot of work ahead of me.

Sat...picked up 4 flatheads....gonna build one good one.

Sun....got all the carbs hooked up on my 4x2 and tried firing the engine....lots of leaks, too much fuel pressure I think. It did start once, but alot of fuel coming out of the emulsion tubes on one carb. Didn't sound too good either....
Going to change out my fuel tank, run another line back to tank to bleed off some pressure from the reg and adjust float levels....

Typical new paint shop blues I see. Good body work is a dying breed. What are your plans for the car? I know you want to fix the problems for the long run but wow looks like a can of worms has started.

I spent all weekend removing an old fence and digging new fence holes only to have the rain fill them up again.. I'm not sure how bad the rain messed it up but I haven't looked yet.

But we did it in a traditional hot rod way.. The only way to pull out 49 year old chain link posts is to use a 60 year old connecting rod. It worked great despite how dangerous it looks. Sure beats the hell out of digging them out of clay. it plucked them out of the ground like weeds.

I wish I spent it working on my car. Instead I spent it knocking down the wall between the kitchen and the living / dining room. At least I had an excuse to use the sawzall in the house ! On the bright side after that I spent the night at the cabin out at the lake, so that was a nice break.

Your right body work now days ****s!

I wish I had the money for a new ****** and rear end. That will have to come later.

The car Is just going to be a driver for now. It's got a 59 235 in it. I'll eventually put a dual intake and split exhaust on it. As far as the body goes it will be a full custom.

Full skirts, frenched lights up front, extended quarters (possibly" packard tailights lights I haven't decided yet), chopped top, floating grill bar, merc or custom grill surround, tuck and roll interior and period color combo and trim on the body. I'm going for a true period correct mid to late 50's custom. Sam barris style or close to it anyways...

Drove to Houston & picked up an engine I bought from "Bad gas".

On the way back, I stopped at the Festa Italiana to see the car show and eat some lasagna. Didn't stay long as I wanted to try to get to Kerrville or Borne and see some hot rods.

Well, it's a pretty long way from Houston to Kerrville and I didn't make it. Got to Kerrville at 9:00PM and didn't see anybody except 2 cars pulling in a Mexican food place. Since the occupants looked like they were getting out to eat I decided not to bother them and headed home.

Got home Sunday at about 10 and layed around watching "Heros" on DVD all day. I was pretty tired after driving 1,600 miles.

hey mynamesnotpete...did you figure out your skirt fit issue? wonder if bondo played a part in them not fitting up right or was it the clamp rod not up on the fender lip?
Isnt it always fun to find that much filler in a car?
Must have been done by some one with no metal skills.
Back in the 70's or 80's maybe it seemed alot of kids thought it was a wonder fixerall for rusted out or dented up sheet metal..

Did F`all this weekend,but...last weekend I ported my flathead following Mike Bishops excellant article.I had really dreaded doing this, as I figured it would be a real pain, but it went really well.I borrowed a high speed die grinder and bought some stones and flap wheels, then got stuck in.It`s a French block and they need quite a bit of work in the valve bowls.Next ,it`s off for a rebore to 3 5/16"..then paintshop, then the rebuild...at long last!!

In all, it took about five hours or so...a good days work that left me feeling satisfied.

Yeah I got it figured out. Part of it was the Bondo. It is going to take a little bit of work to get them to fit just right... But they fit nice and tight now. The clamp rod bas bent the wrong way. Did a little bending Friday night and they are nice and snug now.
