Hello folks! I am trying to do a steering mod, and need some help. I may not be doing a very good job of using the search, but I usually can find answers to my questions without having to ask... I need to adapt a Toyota steering box to use a Ford pitman arm. I have someone who is willing to try machining my Ford arm to use the Toyota splines, but I am wondering if I could also weld the Ford arm (minus the splined part) to the splined part off the Toyota arm?? If I can find a good enough welder... Any ideas?? Drag
What I would do is cut the shaft off the toyota box and replace it with the shaft from a ford box that has the right splines. You'll want to grind/ cut a tounge and grove sort of joint so that the shafts can fit into each other and it's not depending soley on the weld for all of it's twisting strengh. Bevel the edges and get a good weld on there.
I was trying to avoid pulling apart the box, I haven't a clue where I would look for a rebuild kit... This also promises to be a great mod for the Falcons and Mustangs, if it can be done simply enough... Power steering without the leaky power ***ist cylinders... Welding the shaft is an option I hadn't thought about before... Thanks!! Drag
heres how i did it...cut /grind the toyota pitman arm so you have donut with the splines in it. cut a peice of 1/2 plate to length/ shape you need. drill 2 holes at each end with same centers as the ford arm. ream one to size/taper for ford rod end. bore the other out to fit the donut and weld in on both sides. no worries about it breaking when done this way.
