Guys as grim as it may sound I'm back from my trip to Italy. First off it was awsome, but that's a story for another day. Today I'm dipping back into the HAMB knowledge well yet again. This one though is probably gonna be tough. On my last day Letizia brought me to this cool little resto shop in Florence. I met the propriter Massimo. One of the cars there was this awsome Maserati race car. Forgive me for not knowing the exact model but it was one of fourteen ever built. The fellow that owns it was this really cool dude named Mauro. Anyway Mauro races this baby in vintage events. I saw that the car had Sebring competiton decals on it and I told him that course is not to far from where I live in Florida. We got talking about the decals and he has had trouble getting them. Here are a few pics of the car and the decals I'd love to help him find. Do any of you deal with this sort of thing, or have leads to finding these? Thanks for your awsometicity as always.

Pre Birdcage...300-S maybe??? Gills and front look right for one version and it has a 6 cylinder.
Absolutely erotic from every angle. I THINK Carrol Shelby drove one like this or a close version anyway....

AND it's being USED! Is that sweet or what? Look at the damage....beautiful....

Maserati. What a smooth name...gotta be one of the BEST names ever on a car.

Yes Hackerbill ! I remember now 300S something, and they said it was pre- "birdcage" when I asked. I was struggling to understand everything as my Italian language skills are limited.

    Hey,

What language skills are necessary? Beautiful is the same in all tongues.
On your decal search, ya may try a Serbing retro fan club or
YeeBay, it's amazeing what turns up.

I have a couple unused scrutineering stickers from Sebring but I believe they are from a later race than that car would have run in.

The Maser, by the way, is supposedly a 300S although at times it was rumored to be a 450S (I may have this car confused with another.) The car's history has never been completely documented. The engine you show isn't original to the car and was paired with it a few years ago (I think...) and there are a fair amount of rumors surrounding the car/body/chassis. Bluto may have heard about this car. I could get into more about it but would rather not...people tend to get a bit litigious (sp?) when histories of cars are being questioned.

Nice pics, looks like you had a fun trip.

    Regarding the factory documentation...
    Ultimately...does it matter?
I mean...to the people who would use the car as it was meant to be used...a piece of paper with a few numbers etc on it is of less real value than a strip of duct tape.

Factory issue, or a close cousin built from race damaged cast offs...It is what it is...and its beautiful.

I remember a while ago a post on creating new vintage water slide decals by Whizzer I think.

I would assume a car like that being restored would " have" to have the real orig decals but its an option I guess...

  14. Ditto on what Cris said. I think that sometimes when folks are restoring these, they have the new logos painted on. Not original, but I believe that any decals have to be period to the car otherwise painted ones suffice. I'll look into it with my Euro friends.

Great car, though. Got to love that about Italy.

Here's what I have...1967, about 10 years after when they car would (ahem) have ran. I have some extras of these in a box in my barn, this was one I had put on an old camera case...Mike, I got your PM, I imagine these are of no use to the car's owners.

And I'll steer somewhat clear of Bill's comment, since we already visited the subject in that thread awhile back about 100% fake Bugattis, except to say that it does matter, the truth always matters, especially in this day and age.

Cris, could it be you are thinking of this Maserati?
    ( see pics )

From what I read about it it was newly constructed out of mostly old parts, but with a new body or chassis or both.
I think I also read somewhere it was ordered to be crushed by the Italian courts...

Nope, that was a different situation. The car you pictured (if it's the one I'm thinking of) had an indeterminate amount of original parts (mostly drivetrain, I think.) On the whole, it was a recreation of a 350S. Italian courts ordered it and an A6GCS melted down due to some arcane reading of Italian copyright law.

The car Mike posted about has...hmm, I'm not sure how I can put it so that I don't open myself up to a lawsuit. Let's just say that for some people "buyer beware" is a warning and for others it's a sign of opportunity.

Oh, and thanks for posting pics of that car...had never seen actual photos of it.

    I have one more...

So the car that this Thread started with, do you know which Chassis # it might be?
I looked through the list and there were only a couple that ran at Sebring...

The Pegasus & Mobiloil Socony decals should be available from the gas pump restoration market.

We should probably make sure Lord Brockett hasn't already beaten us to it.

Mike, Metalshapes, (everyone, for that matter) when this car showed up a few years ago there were photos of it that very clearly showed a V-8. This was later confirmed to be a modified Quattroporte engine. It was also later found to have had a Maserati 3500 chassis underneath...regardless of what car the body came from (or what shadow it may have been conjured via) when it was first shopped around it was the dictionary definition of a 'bitsa.'

Chassis numbers this car was rumored/hoped/implied to be: 3067, 3071, 3035, and a couple of 450S numbers have been kicked around, also.

Mike, did you happen to get any shots of the ID plate (should be on the dash or bulkhead, but Bluto would know better than I, I'm going off memory)? I guess it's academic, though. Any chassis shots?

Beautiful car...total fake. Body similar to the ex-Moss/Jenks MM 450S, motor straight out of...maybe an early 70s Maserati Indy or Khamsin?

You can recreate these decals. Take really good pics, and have someone trace them in Adobe Illustrator. If they can get that far, they can probably match the original colors as well.

You should be able to send that image via email to one of the several folks online that print decal sheets for model trains, cars, etc, and they can do you a one-off. Those look like they'd fit on an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper...

NICE pics!!!! I think you can still get a decal like that from Mobil oil, you have to call a rep and talk with them, I have been able to get old Quaker State and Penzoil decals in the past. I love the "little Fabiano" picture.... hilarious!!!!!!

That car is just pure engineering at its finest!!!!

If you can find pictures of the decals you are looking for and can down load them into your 'puter, there is a company that can provide you with "decal paper" and you can produce you own decals. Follow the included linc to find the printable decal paper (water decals).
    http://www.decalpaper.com/

I have used this material to produce scale decals which I used on some WW II aircraft models. First you scale the down loaded picture into your puter and make sure it is the size you are looking for. Then you print onto the special decal paper. After printing (and it dries, spray a light coat of clear on the print. After it dries, place in water and apply, you can then spray clear over the mounted decal and it should work fine for this application. Good luck.

    FAKE is bad!
I was thinking it was assembled from actual spares and cast offs! Can't justify fakes. Honesty is important.

The engine on this 300S bears the no. 3073. Its an original genuine but non-matching-no. engine to that car . This motor came as a spare to the USA in 1957 for a different car. It survived with Dr. Fred Simeone who sold it around 2005/6 to Florence, Italy.
There is a debate going on about the chassis if genuine or not.
My humble opinion is that the body of this car is not a coachwork made by the Factory.
The car is now located in Germany.
