Need some quick info... got a great chance on a 351 with an AOD trans. both working good, though don't know the year of either. Problem is I never knowed anything about the AOD. Need the good the bad and the ugly about them.. Any horror stories or advice is welcome , Thanks all,

In my 56 effie I ran an AOD out of a early 90's lincoln behind my 289. It ran sweet. Shifted great and would cruise at 75 on the highway. All it had was a shift kit and new clutches. I wouldn't put big power to it but that little 289 was pretty healthy and it would chirp 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. got 75000 miles out of it before i sold the truck.:(

got a chance to pick both a 351 Windsor and the AOD for $300.00 and they are both in working vehicles. Good power and cruzing material.

i don't have a ton of experience with them but I did rebuild one for my wifes grandma a couple of years ago. It was in a 1990 Crown Vic ex-cruiser. I talked to a friend who worked in a trans shop, the biggest trouble is the plastic retainer that holds the throttle pressure cable to the carb (cruisers with 351s still ran a variable venturi 2bbl), when it breaks, the trans doesn't shift correctly and the trans starts slipping. next thing you know, the trans is burnt up.
I put all new clutches, steels, and bands in the ******, replaced the broken plastic retainer on the carb and the thing works great.
Not nearly as hard to rebuild as most make it out to be.
