I want to swap the straight 8 in my '49 Pontiac for an inline chevy 250 engine with 350TH tranny. I have auto tranny hydromatic now in the car. I was wondering if anyone has put a inline 6/auto in the pontiac before. I wasn't sure if any of the chevy car 1950's inline motor mounts will help or if I am going to have to set engine in and fab everything as I go.
I am going to do a 250/2004r in my 48 chevy this summer. Buffalo Enterprises sells a weld-it -yourself motor mount kit for the 250. You then buy some flathead motor mounts from Speedway, (he supplies the pn). He is in Wa. or Or. 360-652-7684 is his #. The Pontiac may or may not be like Chevy, but if you are the least bit handy, I bet you can make this kit work.
i have a 50 pontiac wit a sbc never seen it wit a inline 6 everything can be done, but why would u want to drop a I6 when u can drop a sbc?
I have a 250 I6 sitting around with some vintage speed parts I though would be cooler and different from run of the mill SBC. I have a 350 and the I6 and 2 project that need engines and I already have all the mounts for the SBC for my 40 ford project so I figured the I6 would be good for crusin in the pontiac and be different with dual carbs and finned valve covers everyone has a SBC in everything.
Droppin that Buick in sounds tempting. If I did that I should probably switch out that new fangled brake system and go back to the reliable mechanical brakes.
i plan on doing the same thing just because i want to, i could put in any engine i want to, and have done so i just finished a 51 pont that i camaro subed w/a pont 350. the thing about pontiacs is the frame is so much different from chevy that you cant transfer any parts. the pont heater is right in the way of mounting a booster on the fire wall. the 6 should go right in but plan on fabing your mounts.
"350 in a 40 ford!!! PLEASE NO!!" i was thinkin the same thing. maybe you should use to 350 for the pontiac and wait to get a real motor for the 40 ford. flatheads are cooler anyways.
"I'm keeping the straight eight in my '53 Pontiac because nobody else is doing it." if its reliable why not.
A friend's family has 15 + years' service from a '49 Streamliner 4 door running that setup WITH AIR - IN MEXICO !
Seems to me the later Chevy sixes mount the same as the V8, so the same mount kits would work. It's different, for sure, but you could round up a Pontiac V8 pretty cheap and it would fit without too much more trouble.
