I have been checking out available insulation for doing my 40 Ford.
The plastic air bubble wrapped in foil, and also closed cell foam, seems
    to be discussed alot.
I remember living nextdoor to a fireman once and he told me that
firemen hated to go to a fire that invoved vinyl siding. He said that
the burning plastic produced a poisonous gas.
I remember breathing a whiff of an acrid smoke in a s**** yard where they were burning plastic insulation off of copper wire.
I thought that one breath was going to kill me I coughed so much!
I decided I didn't want to get caught in a car fire with burning plastic.
I just received a roll of jute insulation with foil on both sides from
Cal Car Covers. It looks great and is economical too!

Unless you are using some hand woven Persian rugs,
    carpets are made from plastic.

If your car catches fire, and you can not put it out quickly, run do not stay around to smell it.

I'd be worried about a lot more if I was inside a car that was on fire. What about dynamat? Isn't that asphalt based, that can't be good if it catches on fire.

Sooooo...you won't be using plastics OR seatbelts!?!?

    I know!
Just leave the doors off too...then no worries about sticking latches!
When you smell smoke you can just roll out unrestricted! ;) :D

It's pretty rasy to tell who has already used the cheap plastic stuff.

I hear that burning cars can be hazardous to your health. Especially if you are in one......maybe better to walk!

    Ahhhh...come on. ;)
We're just having fun at your expense! :D

Seriously though...I can see where your coming from...but worrying about the insulation itself burning is a little excessive. Theres SO much other stuff that will give off those toxic fumes or whatever that you would need to consider the makeup of the entire vehicle...not just the insulation!
    Paint...sealers...carpet...door panels...headliner...wiring...you name it.
ALL those things will knock you for a loop once they start burning.

Just about impossible to get away from it all and still have a car thats fun!
    The key is prevention!
Quality wiring and careful routing to prevent dead shorts to ground from sharp edges etc...

Hey...nobody gets out of this life alive anyway...so stop fretting and just have some fun! :D

Car fires in the state of California are known to cause cancer (but no where else)

your from texas.....dont worry about it

You have more of a chance getting hit by the blue hair

  18. Looks like we find out that those darn rat rods are the safest of all vehicles out there. No stinking plastics, carpet, rubber parts, or any interior to speak of.

  20. Thats why firemen have oxygen kits, though. Odds are if you're in a wreck bad enough to catch fire, the smoke will be the least of your worries -

What's the chances of your **** catching fire....I'd be more worried about driving my car daily and some ***hole hitting me at speed than a little plastic catching fire.

The very best gles available are made with phermaldahyde{sp?}. So much so that a new house is 30% cyanide., from all the carpets, plywood, etc. So the safest place is in the garage!!

  24. If your really worried about it, you better do a little test on that foil back jute. The foil back stuff we get is pure synthetic fiber. I sometimes use a micro torch to melt holes in it! The unbacked stuff is usually a blend made from textile s****s. Another tip; The only carpet you will find that is not synthetic is imported wool with the jute backing. Expensive, and probably has some form of synthetic binder in it.

  25. I buy the insulation from JC Whitney. Its 1 side foil faced with nylon thread woven into the foil. Other side is un-faced. Its made from recycled cloth and other fibers. I recently bought 2 4'X6' rolls with 2 rolls of aluminum tape and 2 cans of spray adhesive for 90 bucks. It is normally more $$$ than that, but I wait for this stuff to go on sale. Ive used it before and like it.
Yeah, there's better out there. I dont have 400 bucks for insulation though.

Another thing to worry about with the Jute insulation. If you put it in the doors and in the quarters what happens when the water seaps past your window wipes? It get into the insulation and then holds the water next to the body. This in turn causes it to start rusting from the inside.

So, am I the only one that carries a fire extinguisher? And yes, regardless of what's burning, it's going to be a ****ty way to die.

  28. I'm not trying to trivialize your safety concerns here but really, if the fire is hot enough to ignite the insulation you're most likely going to be a crispy critter if you don't get out and get away..

Drive defensively, wear a seat belt, and carry an extinguisher.

what about the gas tank, they always blow up in the movies,

  30. Never mind the fact that the wiring is covered with VINYL! So, you better remove your wiring as well.
