My good buddies Dad just gave me a prestine / mint original AAA 1948 Registered Race Car Contest Board. The item would remind you of a salt lakes timing plaque, but this one is embossed the AAA 1948... data and then engraved with the car owners name, car name, car #, engine displacement & race cl*** designation. The item appears as though it was intended to be attached the race car. Fast Edward McCardle, the first track champ of Port Royal Speedway in central PA gave it to me tonight. The metal plate is polished with his name and date engraved into it. He found it in a box of things he came across. Fast Eddie is in his 80's He also gave me a picture of him and his brother in their midget race cars which was taken in 1947. I was also given a 1949 AAA lapel pin that also says Race Car Owner on it with a neat race car logo. I did a quick search on google and found nothing about either item and was wondering if they had any monetary value, and if so.... what would a ball park amount be? I plan on having an enlargement of the photo made and frame the firewal plaque and lapel pin with the enlargement. The items have a huge amount of sentimental value to me, but wondered if anyone knew what such pioneering memorabilia might be worth? Hope to hear from a few folks and see you at the spring and fall Jalopy Showdowns. Flashback Bill
forget the plaques, get all of the old stories and knowledge out of fast Eddie,It'll be worth a lot more!
Well, I went and invited Fast Eddie over for dinner tomorrow night to hear his stories and soak up his wisdom. I also got reprints of the picture of him and his brother in their midgets made. I gave one to my 12 year old son so we both could get them autographed. I framed the boys print so it wont get messed up over time. I framed my print, along with the race car plaque and race car owner lapel pin. I matted the items on red felt. It turned out really nice. I think Fast Eddie will be glad he p***ed those items along to someone who will preserve and cherish them. After dinner, we are going to watch "The Worlds Fastest Indian" Fast Eddie is alot like Burt, the main character in the movie. Edward aught to get a kick out of the movie. He is 86 and a WWII vet. He still has a "keeper" he bought brand new in a garage near his house. Its a black 55 T-Bird. Fast Eddie had a quarte midget built for his son that was raced back in the 50's. That car went on to win a state championship in PA. As for most neat treasures like that, this one is not lost, but hanging from some rafters on the property is "as raced" condition. It is a such a neat treat to see when I go to work for the McCardles on the weekend. You see, Fast Eddie is the father of Beaver Bob McCardle, owner of Beaver Springs Dragway. Fast Eddie helped plan and build a racing facility that is rapidly becoming recognized as a nostalgia drag racing power house. Check out page 32 of the Dec Hot Rod magazine issue and you will see a 2 page article on one of the biggest nostalgia events put on at BSD. For those who have been at BSD, Fast Eddie is the old guy who lives in the house near the 1/8th mile mark. Saddly, Edwards wife, Rita, p***ed away last week. They were such a fabulous couple who just loved the company they got every summer weekend when folks would come from all over to "play in their back yard!" FYI: Fast Eddie was one of the founding members of the Penn Central Racing ***ociation.
Awesome story. Maybe take a few pics after dinner to share with the HAMB. This kind of stuff is one of the greatest things about this board.
