Found these guys this weekend. One in one spot and the other 2 in another. They are the split rim Chevy ones where only the centers are usable. Happy to find 'em none the less. What do people do for the hoop? I read in TRJ that Bobby Green had some where the rims were '32 Ford I believe. Are the centers rivited in to the new hoops or welded?
You need to give Bobby Green a shout. he knows everything about those, including how to put on new hoops. He might hook you up with a fourth if you ask nice.
Nice Score! I have a set of 5 which I got from my Dad's '40 Chev truck (he is using 5 stud falcon rims). These wheels were available on '38-'41 3/4 ton Chevs. When I asked Bobby a while back about the 18" rims he said he uses '32 Ford. I would like to get some measurements of 18" '31/'32 Chev rims to see if they are usable, as they are more common here in Australia. Another possible source is new 18" rims from Antique tyre here in Oz, these would probably be available from Coker in the US But PM Bobby as he is the most knowledgeable bloke regarding high clearance wheels (milk truck wheels). btw I will be running a set on the back of my '25 Chev roadster.
Check front wheel blanks http://www.millertire.com/ They give ID so you can see if they fit without lathe work.
My personal sentiments: If women had wheels instead of breasts, they would be milk truck wheels. So yes, we -love- them.
Yeah, the wheels are cool, but I have a question about the grille shells hanging on the fence. What is the orange one in the center from? I assume it's from a tractor, but not sure.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll go measure 'em and compare to what I saw on the Miller...website. I'll contact Bobby and Coker too. I'll post my finding later. On the grill, I can't remember for sure what it's from, 40's Case perhaps. Things that carry milk are cool and they usually come in pairs.
Congrats! Seems as though these wheels were somewhat popular here in the NW...... I know where another pair are in S. Oregon as well, on a trailer....just gotta get down there to get 'em.......
I was lookin for some wheels for my 49 dodge like that and ran across these...(the ones on the front) They' re chysler 300 temp rims 18'' x 4'' new from dealer $120.00... i needed the part number of one in a car to order.
Also appear to be 17". Find some front tractor wheels, like on a Ford 8N...they'll be @ the right size for the rim.
nothin wrong with split rims, and lock rings, just need to clean up the interlocking areas with a wire wheel, you'll need tubes and flaps to put tires on them, For 40 or 50 years, that's all there was. The air helps keep them together . We even used to use ones that had pieces broke out of them . And ran 110 psi on 20 inch ones . frank
Not to steal the post, but it looks like an Allis-Chalmers Model B. They make a bitching Miller style sprint or track nose, especially if you turn them upside down. And you can buy new radiators for them Need one?
On the Millertire site the closest I.D. was for a 3x18 " rim. It's I.D. was 16.4 ". On the wheel I measured it was 16.625 or so. I need to take a more accurate measurement. So about .123 at the seam/ connecting piont. Not bad, and about 50 bucks a hoop. Thanks for the grill I.D. And yes I may need a radiator..PM me please. As for the wheels. Split rims are fine, but typically on an older style hot rod it seems people are usually looking to run something a bit narrower then these rims are. Bonneville setup for example. "Tall and narrow baby. That's how we roll"
