We went down to Temple for the drags on Sat. Always great races and great cars to check out. I went this year with the intent to run the old flatty merc down the track just for grins. I'd like to say I had so much horsepower that I tore it up, but the truth is, I got to the line with a "stock" panel with open headers next to me.(couldn't hear ****) When I gave it gas and eased off the clutch, all I got was a small pop, but didn't move an inch. Seems I broke my driver's side axle right half in two. It was bad enough to get pulled back out of the staging area by a little 4 wheeler, but then we got to go all the way back through the entire pit/spectator area. What a first trip down the track (track side)!! Before we even got started trying to see what was broken, I had a Temple local, Clarence Thomas, and his boys, that came to ask if we needed help, and when we figured it was the rear-end, he told me they had a 50 ford rear-end at their house just a few minutes away. Uncle Danny with the Scorpion 1& 5 guys came over to lend a hand and his great wisdom of rear-end/general mechanical stuff and really made things quick to fix. Long story short, Clarence took me to his house, we loaded up the rear-end and got back to the Merc. He stayed with me and my Torques buddies until we had pulled an axle out of the 50 housing and put it in the Merc. Break - to- fix in about 3 hours. That's some damn good folks! I had to about twist his arm to make him take some money for the rear-end.(I brought the whole thing home for parts the next time I get a smart-*** idea to drag race) Thanks a million to Clarence and his boys, the Scorpion crew, and to my buddies in the Torques, that are always there to help. This is one of the many reasons we love the "old car /traditional hot rod/rat rod/HAMB/drag racing/hot rod" kinda people. People we didn't know from another town help us when people we know from D/FW didn't even stop to ask. THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP GUYS!!!! Hugh & V (53ash & Torquewench58) P.S. If any of you have problems in D/FW area, just shout to any of us Torques and friends, and we will gladly return the favor. Hugh
I second the thanks to the Thomas' for the rear end. Hell, we were gonna get that Merc home, one way or another. And their generosity, gave us the opportunity for the best/easiest outcome. Thanks to Uncle Daniel, too, He's been around all this stuff a lot longer than we have. Group efforts just have a way of workin' things out. Here are some shots of the 'fun-in-the-pits'. Makes ya wonder if it's named the 'pits' for a reason.
Well said brother... I'm kinda glad i did not make it since everyone that did go in our club broke or had problem at some point in time. Its memories like that will keep for ever. I'll be there next year.
I just want to add my Thanks as well... we try to hall extras of the most common things things that we might on a long trip... but were not expecting this ... but all in all it was a perfect day .. had the break happened at any other place we may not have ended up in such good shape.. God is good!!!!
